Detector testers.

An example of this is cars on an auto makers test track. They paint weird color schemes on them or even hang fabric coverings on them to hide what they actually look like.

Another example would be video games. Game testers are given access but have to sign an NDA and can't release any info on the game. They are there to test the game and give feedback. Once the game is close to release the NDA is lifted and others are also given the game and expected to upload videos for the publicity.

NDAs are a normal part of most any new product development.

Again I say, have you ever heard a bad review from a tester who got a free detector to test? Yeah!

I get your point, but you or I don't know if say NASA Tom is on Minelab's actual payroll or under contract. I think NASA Tom works in like the product development and testing. I'm lead to believe by reading the commentary on the site he gets products throughout the development stage. Not just at the very end. He's an engineer I believe, and much more in the weeds of how a detector operates and functions versus the guy or gal who a detector company say's hey here's a free detector to test and comment on.

I'm going specifically on what Greybeard had posted. His statement alone is called censorship. I get the whole NDA thing. BUT , if you say write up a review and tell ML , "Hey this is what I want to release and say" , ML then looks at it and says "no , you can't say or release that"....Well....there might be some negatives in your write up that they don't want out there. That is censorship. Flat out. I want to see , read the pro's and cons. Make my own educated decision. Otherwise I view ALL parties as being untrustworthy , dishonest , deceptive , sketchy , etc.

This is a wild guess but I think ML truly did have inside testers for the Nox. Maybe even a few outsiders , doesn't matter. These guys reported that the ears were susceptible to breaking rather easily ( or outside the norm). But these coils had already been massed produced and ML ignored it and pushed them through anyways. Choosing to cover under warranty as a gamble. I just don't see anyway these could have made it through normal testing and being released without the company knowing beforehand.

I think there's some confusion here with you and greybeard possibly talking about 2 different things.

If Minelab is giving a completed (or 99.999% completed) product to a tester who will provide a public review of the product, but tells that tester, "you can't say anything bad about our product," then I agree, that's not good.

But if during the course of developing a product, the Minelab wants to control what the tester says publicly about the unfinished product, I see nothing wrong with Minelab (or any other company) doing that.

Minelab has been producing weak eared coils since the 11" E series coils and most of their CTX 3030 coils. I complained about them then when they broke and people complain about the Nox coil ears now which have pretty much the same super thin coil ears. Nothing new about Nox coil ears breaking. Its been happening for close to 15 years. They know all about it. Why they haven't done a redesign for the E series, CTX and Nox coils is beyond me.

As far as full NDA's, Limited NDA's or no NDA restrictions, personally I like to see pre-release testers just tell the facts as they are allowed to relate them or as they understand them. Some Beta detectors are not complete and they either aren't allowed to stray very far into the weeds or some functions just aren't there. Any factual information is appreciated by me anyway.

I don't need to hear how great they think a detector is.....that just turns me off. I can decide that for myself. If they are allowed to do comparative multi brand testing, great. If they are allowed to test models from the same manufacturer against each other, that's even better. Just don't try to sell me a detector by telling me how great it is when you just got aquainted with it. It makes me wonder.........

Could be...I know if I had a company with testers , I wouldn't have them say anything BEFORE a general release to the public. But these guys are pumping out videos , before it's out. This I don't understand. And you certainly don't see them talking any trash on the product. If they did, they probably wouldn't be called upon to do anymore testing. This whole process is lame to me. It seems it's all about the hype and BS marketing. Appears that the only one's who may find out about the negatives , before purchase , are us , the consumer. Maybe I'm missing something and this is the future , idk. I just hope the end product is quality that can be fixed with an update at worst and everyone is happy.

Deus 2 too cheap imo.
For what it does on beach.
Just my opinion.

Let’s see how many beach hunters are on the Deus 2 train a year from now.

I figure loads and loads.

Who would want to use a PI heavy detector and dig those fish hooks and junk. Say where there is no black sand.

Think I would use a Deus 2.

Cheap ? Hardly. I did a short 2 hour hunt today on 2 beaches and got 13 cents. Using a lightweight PI. It's not just me. Others from LA to San Diego aren't faring much better. You think that Deus is gonna do better ? No way. Granted , conditions aren't great. But there are many things to consider when purchasing a new detector as far as being a beachhunter in So.Cal. One is lack of targets not just from conditions but also people haven't been going to the beach consistently over the last 2 years. Add in people using less coins , wearing junk jewelry over gold , and more competition , it's not good. If the targets aren't there , their not there. No detector is going to pull them out. Much less a $1600 machine. Quite a few things to ponder.....

I wonder.
Which is deeper on silver ring, silver dime, and a copper penny On typical salt water beach?
Deus 2 using beach or and or dive program or a pi detector, all wearing 11” coils?
Something to think about.

These machines RETAIL for $1600. The street price is $1350. Just ask one of the dealers on this forum.

NASA Tom was working in the development of the Equinox and had them change some things on the iron bias before the detector was released.

What I don't like is some people get detectors to try, then claim how great it is and never tell the truth about the major problems it has.

They do biased videos because they like free detectors and don't want to bite the hand that feeds them.

No metal detector company would want me to test their detectors and report everything about them because they would not like any negative reporting.

Those of us who find gold and silver on a regular basis will continue to with our current detectors... as I posted in beach forum I am waiting for a couple of beach hunters who I know.. Carter and Gary Storm from Detector Comparisons to take them out...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me we have been told, after the fact, that certain people had been testing a detector for a company, but were not able to say so. Only later after it has been tested, covertly, then approved does the tester's start giving reviews publically that they're testing one.

That is a question idk unless I had 1 to try out. Or a unedited video showing exactly that. What I do know....is that I don't trust a video with a tape measure on the ground and some guy swinging a coil over a target that is allegedly buried at some mystery depth and getting all geeked up over it. It looks like a decent detector on some of these videos. But looks can be deceiving. Just because it looks like a rose , doesn't mean it can't smell like đź’©.

I just checked with one of the dealers on this forum on Monday about his best price on the Deus 2. He quoted me a price of $1,599.

That’s one if the reasons I’m going to wait. I will save a few bucks.
