My carry

I like this one because you can call the law after shooting

Depending on where I go, I will carry, and I have a concealed permit. I usually have my 38 with the trusty HydraShok 110 grain ammo. The place that I seem to have the most need for it is at Jacksonville Beach at night. Usually I just watch my back a lot and, every once in a while, there's the inevitable guy who's following me around; I watch that guy closely because he almost always comes up asking about how much I paid for my detector (over and over again, smelling of alcohol and fiddling in his pocket).

When someone like that approaches me I always downplay the cost of anything that I have/do and make sure that I keep one hand on my pointy digging trowel and make it obvious. This very thing happened to me a weekend ago and after about 20 minutes of him following us around he finally approached and was very shifty the whole time, as if he were summing up his strategy or likelihood of getting some of my stuff. It's not such a big deal, usually, but some of the local beaches have had murders in recent days by the homeless people, and also it seems that no matter where you go nowadays there are the inevitable crack dealers hanging out on the beach just looking for trouble. I'd rather be safe than sorry any day.

Seems like a lot of the east coast beaches of FL. are getting bad, with Daytona beach one of the worst.

I would think pepper spray would work on anything with eyes, Epi.

That capsicum is nasty stuff.

If you really wanted to be effective with the spray, yes the pepper spray works well, and they make Bear spray for that reason as well. It comes in a bigger bottle and is some pretty nasty stuff.

Thanks Steve. I think I'm going to pick some up.

Epi-Hunter,
either one of these will bring the biggest of guys to there knees..they are formulated for bears so they are potent plus they have holsters to wear on your side so its easy access and a deterrent for any shady character who may have bad intentions..in other words if they see that hangin off your side they know you aint playin around.

I havent got to go detecting yet but I do carry at times a Walther P99, and I also have Guard Alaska Defence spray in My Jeep its 9 oz of spray and costs around $35 for spray and $10 for holster they also make a 4oz for arouns $20 and you can get it at Cabela's I used it on a couple of wild dogs while broke down on trail making repairs two squirts and they wanted nothing more to do with me lol. I would recomend it over a firearm as most people would rather not use there firearm and I would rather not have to deal w/ that ##### storm. I also like the Henry survival rifle as it breaks down small enuff for a day pack. and very cheap ammo.

I carry my Bersa 380 when detecting, actually I carry everywhere I go, even to church, but if I am not detecting I carry my springfield xd40....and of course both loaded with cor-bon ammo

Thanks for the info on the sprays. Will it really deter them enough to make them go away? My husband suggested that it might just make them mad enough to attack (in the case of animal) or shoot at me (in the case of human).

i assure you if you blast that stuff in someones face itll drop em where they stand. get ya some and ill let ya test it on me

Mace has a pepper spray gel.
They claim it will shoot a stream of mace up to 18' and stick like glue to the attackers face.

Anybody have any recommendations for me of some kind of spray that works on both people AND animals? I don't want to carry a gun but some kind of protection would be nice.

My grandmother, rest her soul, always took walks and always carried a small can of wasp and hornet spray. She was allergic to bees but carried it for self defense from dogs or people. That stuff has a 25ft stream and you can stop most trouble before it gets too close. I think it is much more effective than mace and you can carry it anywhere.
Also if you can manage to pull out your lighter whilst spraying it makes a great flame thrower with a 25ft reach!

We use capsicum where I work (we make salsa). The tiniest amount on your skin causes the most horrendous burning you can imagine. It's weird too because you swear from the pain that your skin must be blistered all to pieces but at worst it just gets a little red. Nasty nasty stuff.

Self Protection

I thought about carrying a picture of Hillary Clinton in my wallet, that way when they see it they will drop the wallet and run away screaming!

It's nice to be able to!

Walther PPKS for my neighborhood.Smith and Wesson 357 for surounding in doubt areas and Kimber 45 for md'ing in da hood! All kidding aside I'm certified to carry the PPKS 380 but usually don't,but now you've got me thinking about it,lol

Hi all,
Fastforty has the correct attitude. If you want to carry a pistol for personal protection. You must get some professional training far beyond what his required to get your CCW permit. I have handled firearms for the past 35 years.
I am considered an excellent shot with rifles shotguns, but let me tell you a pistol is a whole different story. If you wish to carry a pistol for personal protection that is fine with me in fact I encourage it. Just take it very seriously and remember practice practice practice. If you are not shooting 50 to 100 rounds a week you are not proficient.
Sorry I do not mean to sound like I am preaching but too many people take carrying a pistol too lightly and wind up getting themselves or the wrong people killed. Rant off

Mike

Have you seen my avatar! Most of the time when I get out of my Jeep other people lock thier doors.

i have my concealed carry permit and have a nice kimber .45, but frankly, its kinda heavy to pack around and most of the places i hunt, i figure my size plus a
digging tool will keep most people from getting any wise ideas. i think that once i get my new pistol (kahr cw-9) which is alot lighter and smaller i might carry more often because sometimes when i get into "the zone" while swingin and also wearing headphones i think someone could sneak up on me if they wanted to. in the areas i typically hunt, i dont think its will ever be an issue, but i have always figured that i would rather carry my pistol and never need it rather than be put in a situation where i need it and not have it! I havent had to use it yet (had a close call though) and i hope i never need to. anyways HH all.
