Fastfourty has a great point in GET SOME TRAINING. I am a 20 year vet, and assumed everyone knew gun saftey until I had a shoot at my place. Most people who have not had any training are more a threat to thier famiy than a bad guy. I was afraid to go in the woods after going to a gun saftey class with my son. A few of the folks there should of been banned from ever owning a rubberband gun, but were "coached" to pass.
I don't carry, but look homeless when I go to places I need to deal in cash. I deal with some scary people when I haul scrap. When my wife ask why I go out looking so bad, I ask her "do I look like a guy with a roll of $100s?". I also constantly check six.
My wife wanted a handgun for home saftey, but I told her it is to easy to shoot yourself when the barrell is close to you. She can load and run the Auto 12 gauge just fine. I taught her defensive positioning, and to shoot until the slide locks back. I have not given much thought to when I am MDing. I assume most punks have no idea what a detector cost, since most people who ask me think $200 is enough to buy a top machine. I would tend to think carring a gun in the open would attract some people to feel they need your gun to sell at a pawn shop, but can see how it would cause others to move on to an unarmed target. Of course Kansas is one of the best states to raise a family in if you are looking for safe, conservitive, affordable, and friendly place to live. Here I feel safe 99% of the time, and don't feel compelled to carry. I know when I visit Philly, London, SanteFe, or any big city, I sometimes wish I was packing!
Great subject that merits some thinking. No one plans to fail, they just fail to plan.
