What the heck is it ?

Dug this up in the Hudson valley . The area has many revolutionary war sites . The item was at a cabin site that dates to minimum 1800 ;. The hair pin is 2" long . People have guessed its a hinge ; and also a fire starter , which makes some sense bc certain parts of it are worn smooth from ages of handling . I'd love to hear everyones thoughts !!

Looks like a staple for attaching barbed wire to a fence post. Actually, after a second look, it seems to be too long for that.
