The 1916-D has returned home! Graded VG08 !!!!!!

I have looked at several price guides, stuff on line, prices on ebay, talked to coin dealers etc......looks like $1,500 to $1,600 range for VG08

Not sure who you talked to about the value but they were a bit high. Your coin is more in the 800.00 to 1k range . When it comes to certified coins the grading company comes into play when looking at the value. Two 1916 d mercs sold at the last orlando F.U.N auction in july via heritage and both pulled 1150.00 both were ngc graded
Another 1916-d vg 8 ngc just sold roughly a week ago via ebay for 1167.00 while the last anacs graded vg8 merc sold via bowers and merena in november of last year for 690.00. Pcgs guide on the coin is 1600.00 but again this would refer to only a pcgs graded coin and even at that it would be a high high retail price. Ngc lists the coin at 1175.00 but again only for an ngc coin. I know you are not interested in selling your coin but I thought I would give you the actual breakdown on the value. If anyone else has any questions regarding the value of a find or questions about coin prices feel free to send me a P.M, I am a full time coin dealer so I can give a pretty good idea on the actual value of coins.

Its a once in a life time find congrats

Awesome to see it came back and graded as it is, still just a stunning once in a lifetime find!

Was waiting to hear how this turned out. WTG..!!! Keeps me hoping that I can find something like this at some point.

Awesome job buddy! Congrats on that beauty! Hold it forever!

Amazing find! But what kills me is that another one, 1916D, was found recently somewhere in the Chicagoland area. This person, I think, is not on this forum. But double WOW! 2 1916D's!!!!!

Man, I gotta get off of the computer and HUNT!

Still an amazing find!

Very nice!

I have found not 1, not 2 but 3 1916 dimes this year and not one a 1916 D. The last one is worn so bad I can't tell if it is a D or not.

Found this one in March a 1916-S

I am glad you find it funny that I was trying to educate you on the value of your find. My earlier post is not an opinion its a fact as to the value of your find. Its to bad you find it so funny that another member here tried to help you out with the value of your coin. I am not some debbie downer trying to put down your find, I am in fact a full time coin dealer, I am a pcgs authorized dealer, ngc authorized dealer, cac submission center, American numismatic association lifetime member, Florida united numismatic member as well as several others. I have been dealing with coins for several years and i was simply trying to give you a real number on the value of your find. I am glad its funny to you that another member tried to help you out.

VERY COOL FIND

just out of couriosity for my own sake....when you had it graded why did you not have them clean it....does it lessen the value of it?
just wondering so if i ever find something like that i know what to do with it

Yes when you clean a coin it can destroy the value. There is a service called NCS that is a subsidiary of NGC, they will conserve coins if sent to them. The only time a person would want to do this howerver is if the coin is still being damaged due to corrosion or a corrosive substance still on the coin. Even the lightest cleaning can leave (hairlines) on the surface and fields of a coin making the coin ungradable. While raw coins can be very valuable, having a coin graded from a reputable grading company will add quite a bit of value depending on the coin.

Just to give you an idea below is a coin that was improperly cleaned. The coin was sent to ncs for conservation but due to the owner of the coin improperly cleaning the coin there was nothing that could be done. The coin was not gradable but it is a genuine coin and now can be sold as a genuine coin without the question of it being a fake.

What kind of correspondence do they give you? Are there any personalized comments like "You have found a rare gem?"

I wonder if they open it and are like "Check this out! I just got a 1916D Winged Liberty Head Dime in good shape!" or "Check out this 1909 VDB!" or are they like "Yawn... Now I am going through the rare submissions again. I do it every Wednesday... Yawn."

What did you clean them with? Definitely examples of how not to clean them. They look like you used medium steel wool and brushed the last one from left to right with dirt steel on it.

Do they make brass wool, that might work no non key dates?
