I am in a poker club and our leader is a serious coin collector. He is always interested in the coins I find. Tonight he told me he buys $500 in half dollars every week. Apparently someone at the bank had been keeping the silver half dollars that had been coming in and had hid them in the vault. When he went to this bank last week and made his request, the branch manager went into the vault and found this stash and brought it to him. He said EVERY HALF DOLLAR WAS SILVER! 1000 silver half dollars!!! There were a couple dozen Barbers, and over 100 Franklins and the rest were Washington’s.

He had a smile that wouldn’t die! What a jackpot!!

Wow !!!!

So what would you estimate that $500 worth of half dollars was really worth being silver ?

Half dollars

So how many banks does he have to hit to buy $500 worth every week? I wonder if my bank would even have that many, silver or not.

Yes! My thoughts exactly-- those aren't commonly in circulation (in my limited experience) so it seems like it would be difficult to find a bank that regularly keeps 1000 of them on hand.

In any case-- that is an epic score for sure! :wow:

$500 in halves is only one box. I used to pick up several boxes per week from one bank alone, I had a half-dozen accounts -

You are right, banks don't normally keep $500 boxes of halves on hand, you must simply order them and the halves come in several days later via Brinks, Loomis etc...

...and if you do order a box and the bank calls to say they've arrived, make sure to pick 'em up promptly or you might get 'poached' by another CRH'er...

Wow someone made a haul!
How does a bank employee 'hide' silver halves? Everything in the bank vault must be counted and balanced each day.

I'm assuming you meant the rest were Kennedy's... I hope your buddy buys that branch manager lunch for bringing out that haul. ;)

I'm trying to figure this out...How it happened? You think some person at the bank was sitting on this hoard and figured the safest place for it was in the vault until the time he wanted to get it out of there like it was a Normal transaction? Then, the BM who apparently had no idea, handed it over to your buddy who came in for his weekly box?

Or purely accidental, like some kid, ignorant of coinage, hauled in G'pas box of halfs and simply deposited them into his debit account and your Buddy was in the right place at the right time??

My BIL's mom worked at a small town bank 30yrs ago, she found a bag of silver dollars in the vault and bought them all at face...I suspect if an average person came in and asked if there was a bag of silver dollars in the vault, the reply would be 'NO'...

It makes you wonder if there are ever any employees that work at the places that the bank gets those coins from that watch for silver coins for themselves to buy at face value, that would be a very nice employment bonus !

I recall a business in the era of 2008-12ish that mined 90% coin. Jackson Metals. Not affiliated with banks. I'm sure they cleaned up!

Employees at the rolling facilities such as Brinks I'm sure are held under strict policy. Who really knows?
