Revenge of the Doane Boys

something that combines treasure hunting, historical accuracy and a good adventure.

lol, I want that to be my life story! Right now I'm struggling to make ends meet with a part-time job (I love it, though, it's loads of fun) and whatever else I can manage to eke out ... computer work, ebay, house-sitting, you name it.

I wish I lived on a pirate ship.

Could happen for you if you tried and had a bit of luck. Look at what happened to Joanne Rowling, she went from being on social security to, by last count, a billionairess.

... Wait, for real?

I write a blog about history and also part-time for the newspaper that I work for (normally I work as the librarian) ... hmm ... I wish I could find a way to make money this way.

Yes. I am no expert, but it is probably a good first draft for one. Just build on it. Add to it. You know more about writing than we do, but it I could definitely see picture it in a magazine, it is excellent! Rudy is probably right, right now you would do good to have it published at all, but I am kind of caught up in all that fear about the MD Reality TV show pilot making people go into our hobby like crazy. This was discussed in another thread. So if it does go crazy maybe you could cash in on that in a bigger magazine.

I am kinda gettin that pirate vibe from you.

Yar.

First off all I have to agree with everyone else...your story and writing skills are great!

I looked at the pics you added of the IH and that scratch looks to be quite old, are you sure you did it? It looks more like a crack than a scratch.

The compass is still a pretty awesome find. I've never done any relic hunting but I'd say that might qualify for a finds contest in one of the mags or even a submission to Garrett and a chance to win a Propointer.

I got a reply to my query about submissions from W&ET. They pay 3 cents per word and $5 per photo. Cool! Thanks for the suggestion, Rudy.

I don't watch much TV so I didn't know about that show -- it sounds cool, though! (And yes, I'm trying to stay positive instead of being like "Aw man, but I liked it first!" It's not easy, is it?)

So, are you going back?

Hells yeah! It turns out, like, half the people I know have already been to that cave. I found a cool Android app called EveryTrail -- it lets you record your trips and then share them online -- and somebody had been to the cave and mapped their trip out. So now I've got directions.

No, I wasn't sure if I'd made that scratch or not. I'd like to think I didn't! :D

I'll take another look at the compass -- for a while I was afraid to even touch it, but now that I've opened it, it looks like I might be able to gently touch it up with some water and a toothbrush. No electrolysis, though! ;)

Sounds that you had got cool finds on the top of the cliff!!!! Its really thrilling to find the old US Army compass and 1864 Indian Head penny!!!!!

As I read your story when you first posted it, I was thinking you have a real knack for writing. Your sense of humor really adds to your story. I'm about to look for your blog as I look forward to reading that also. I would say you should contact every publication you can. You never know where it can lead. One story published could open the door for many more. Please be sure to keep us posted.

Cool. You are on your way! Let us know when you have it ready for submission.
But don't post it here. Many magazines and journals have rules about the work having
to be substantially unpublished before their acceptance.

Gotcha -- thanks, Rudy. I posted it on my website too, but I think I'll just rewrite it enough that it'll qualify as something new.

:D

I love the adventures like the ones you have. Always a good time when you look back on them. I like your writing style. You can picture what's happening as you tell a story. You would make a good pirate. Lol I think most people that do this have a lil pirate tendencies in them. Lol. We are all looking for treasures. Whatever that might be in our heads. Weather an old coin, jewelry or just some modern clad. We are all in search of our "treasures". Wish you nothing but the best of luck on your future adventures and look forward to reading more.

A storytelling pirate?

"AVAST! Once upon a scurvy time, YAR, there be a limey scalawag ..."
