More of the finds from where the Calif. cob came from...

park finds...

Gotta love hunting like that ---when the old coins and relics keep coming outa the ground-- like it will never end... Nice photos and write up ! Tony AZ..

I am drooling over all those photos of the finds. So cool. It doesn't seem like many indian heads were found, I wonder why. Is the site done now?

Hey there Jam-flicker, good to hear from you. I "may or may not" have hunted this site again yesterday with a person you know. Doh ! We are scrounging for left-overs, and I'll post more later about that.

As for the ratio of IH's : Some IH's are getting found. But you're right that .... compared to silver of the same date ranges, it's not a high ratio. This is true of any place where the CA coin-date-ranges are 1880s to 1910-ish : There will usually be more silver, than IH's, of that date-range era.

The reason is: The San Francisco mint did not put out IH's till 1908 and '09 (and even then-so, as low mintage coins). But were putting out silver coins all during that same era.

I don't know why V nickels were an exception to this rule. Because they too come from back east, yet show up a lot in that 1880s to 1910 era. Perhaps because, at the time, in the era before auto-travel: If you were getting ready to travel 'coast to coast' (all the movement was east-to-west), you probably were conscious of cargo space & weight. So ... for example ... it's far easier to find bust coins here, that Large cents. (but ... of course ... who needs pesky large cents anyhow, eh ?) :sissyfight:

Oooh! Oooh!! I think I know who! I think I know who it is!! :p:lol:
I think I may know who it is as rumors spread haha. A guy who I hunt with that's name starts with a D has been getting updates from a guys with my name but spelled different who's been updating me  That makes sense about the indians and true a lot more silver S mintmark coins were being produced in California during those years. The last couple years have been my best indian head coin years but maybe I am just getting better and the deep zinc signals.

Some more recent finds from the site :

So Tom, you go for like, months on end without posting a single find. People were starting to wonder if you even own a detector anymore...and then you blast us with all this? "WOW!"-is an understatement! Why isn't this super-site-summary thread posted in the Mind Blowing Eye Popping section?
I'm always happy for the folks who found something great, or a bunch of awesome finds. This time is no exception. I am happy for you guys, but this time, I am feeling some real envy...I can feel it in my stomach. Is that what "sick, sick, sick" means? Looking at the photos increases the sensation. I don't like it. Not one bit! No worries, though. I'll get over it; but for now: sick, sick, sick!

Foragist, some md'rs, on forums post all their finds. Even a few wheaties or a single merc, every gold ring, etc....... Heck, others even post their clad totals ! But I only post for things like a gold coin, a reale, or some epic hunt site.

The project is over now. Fill-dirt is added to the final grade. Soil is seeded for the new incoming grass, etc....

The 8 or 9 of us, that had been in on the hunt, have compiled all our #'s. Some hunted it numerous times during the tractor/soil movements. Others just came a time or two. Here's a few statistics :

1) Final silver count: Approx 270 silver coins

2) Other coin counts just too numerous to begin to pin down. Thousands and thousands of wheaties. Scores of Vs, buffalos, IHs, tokens, etc....

3) A few gold rings, but not many . Despite being in "relic mindset", this turf just wasn't conducive to good jewelry ratios. It was more of a "lie-on-the-grass and drink beer" type park, for all it's history . Rather than athletic in nature, or whatever.

4) Coins of note: Two (and possibly three) reales were found. A cob was found. Two large cents were found (rare for CA). Lots of foreign coins from the 1840s to 1860s turned up (as a testament to SF's point of entry into America, as a port).

Incredible site, Tom! Ever consider doing a writeup, with photos, for the local historical society? I wouldn't suggest this if it would attract a bunch of people with MD's to come pound it some more, but if it wouldn't, it is a cool story to tell!

.... it is a cool story to tell!

Yes. We did consider a "story ". So here it is, on this thread !

As for "historical society ": It was an ironic moment, when about the same time this was going on, that some local archies had done a dig in a nearby demolition site. The newspaper article was making a big fuss about the various items they found. Eg.: A doll-head, a horse shoe, broken glass, .... etc.....

When the day comes that archie's wouldn't "bristle " at the the thought of md'rs finding such things, is the day that such info would be forthcoming to "historical societies ".

Tom,
What can be said that has already been said? Yep! You guessed it....SICK, SICK, SICK! Ever since you said that phrase to me when one of my first finds were two large cents in the same hole....I have waited to say it back to you. I walked around for DAYS muttering and laughing to myself your now famous three word chant. What a motivator it was for me. And as pretty much everyone knows...I enjoy the twist of humor. May God bless you with more fab finds my friend.

Great job on research and hitting that site.
Thanks for the totals and good to see a couple of LC's found out there.

Y'all tore it up! Congrats to you and your buds on all of those nice finds.

Waltr, Estim8tor, and Richie, thanx for enjoying our hunt with us.

And yes Richie : We kept looking at each other, in the middle of the night, muttering under our breaths: "It doesn't get any better than this " ! :D
