Magnet Fishing

That's interesting!

Well, my results for my first trip aren't very cool: around 30 "Hot rocks", 2 nails, 1 piece of rebar, 1 bolt, & 1 screw. But it doesn't look like it has had much activity. Soon (hopefully this weekend) I'm going to be going to a nearby lake that is always busy. There is a dock and 2 peninsulas that stick into the lake. Hopefully it will be better there. :fishin:

When I start I want to look under bridges. It seems that people are always throwing things from them.

When my brother-in-law was on the Police Department, he said they were chasing some burgulary suspects and when they went across a bridge over a river, they threw the jewelry they had stolen over into the water. I don't know if it was in anything that a magnet would pick up but like metal detecting, you never know what you might find.

My hottest spots (after docks etc) are definitely below bridges over major roads. Lots of drug paraphernalia- bongs, etc and some things I didn't even know were drug related until I looked them up. No guns yet tho.
I mostly magnet fish from a kayak.

Boat ramps, boat docks, swimming docks, fishing docks, bridges, or any deck that is built over or on the edge of the water for dinning/sunbathing or such.

Thanks for the Replies...

Good luck Wolfie!
Somewhere on this forum is a guy from Ireland or Scotland who magnet fishes.
he has the most amnazing accent too:yes:
Thanks, Matt! :D I'll try to find him. :fishin:

I was only there about an hour, and it was very shallow, (under 3 feet) so I'm sure stuff could easily be eyeballed by someone. Or maybe another magnet fisherman beat me to it.

How Come we never see any pictures from Magnet Fishing finds?

come on what you Got?

Found a decent clamp-on fishing rod holder off a boat dock today. A couple other things, and a tub full of rocks, but the rod holder is a good find.

FINALY a damn picture of something someone actually found Magnet fishing on this forum !! I was thinking it was a good old fashioned Snipe hunt

I was about to give up on this thread.. THANKS Foragist !!

This looks pretty interesting. My question is how often do you latch onto something heavy by accident? I weigh about 160, so I would not be able to pull a strong 300 lb magnet off a heavy item in the water. Should I stick with smaller magnets, or just "cut it loose" if I get stuck with a bigger magnet.

I suppose you could get a come-along if there was something close by to hook up to... if you were prepared for that to happen.

No worries. A 300lb magnet will never take 300 pounds of force to free from something underwater. Worst case, your magnet face is nice and clean, and it lands on a nice clean, flat metal car or something. Then you would have to pull very hard straight up to free it, but still not 300 pounds. If it's too hard to pull straight up, then just move, and pull at an angle. Easy. Your rope doesn't need to be rated higher than the magnet either, but it needs to be strong, and easy on the hands.

I went with a 148 pound magnet and it is working great. You don't need a huge magnet, but like Foragist said, unless you have a clean magnet stuck unto a huge flat surface, you don't have to worry about the weight. Part of the reason I went with a small magnet was the price, I didn't want to spend a lot more then $20 for the setup, and with the magnet & 100 feet of 550 pound paracord it came out to be just under $20. :D
