It is string and I think it’s synthetic so I don’t think it’s too old it’s just an odd little thing that is why I am trying to get an ib

At first I would agree with Mark, but the string threw me. Where did you find it. The string has the look of being military.

Looks like the end cap for hanging Dry Salami.

I think Huntin Dog is right. Its a closure for a sausage casing. string for hanging in smoke house.

So it's a Bologna casing closer/hanger. I have found quite a few of those and now I know what they are and since the county I live in is the Bologna capital it makes sense.
