just curious.. who takes pepper spray out in field?

Sweet. I carry a sa-xd subcompact 9mm extended clip 17 rounds. But I also carry my CANE CORSO in un-know locations. It's faster than my gun

You say you carry a Cane Corso. I know of a breed of dog "Cane Corso", which are beautiful animals. I do not know of any other definition for a Cane Corso. So, may I ask what you are referring to?

My Daughter gave me a small can of pepper spray to take with me detecting.. At first I thought just something else in the way, but started thinking maybe not a bad idea? after seeing what people are doing these days just to get a few bucks maybe it is a good Idea. Never know if you might also walk upon a rabbied animal too who is persistant on attacking. I got a dangerous looking digger but the spray would be safer I'd think. your thoughts?

Carry it with you for your daughters sake :).

Wild animals around here aren't as aggressive as in other areas because they are used to living with humans side by side for many generations, noise alone will keep our bears at a distance, wolves are rare, coyotes don't eat large people, wild cats stay away as do copperheads and rattlers, it's the humans that I worry about.

The men here carry they say because of bears, which in my 50+ years know of only one attack caused by a man chasing down and harassing a bear until it attacked. I know of a woman here who chase off bears out of her garbage with a broom.

I think it's mostly against other humans that you run into that are a problem, yet, even an empty holster is enough to deter them just make a show of a bulge and belt.

Also Wisdom and prayer goes a long way. If your instincts say its' time to leave than leave!

Yes. shes a dog 138lbs of pure beauty and muscle. So between the springfield xd and my cane corso i think..........ill be ok :)

Maybe some of you detect the most dangerous areas, but most suburbs & small towns are safe. If you want to see the serious crimes rates for all US towns pop. 200 & up, please see city-data.com/ People on the forum section can also advise you on relative danger of different neighborhoods in large cities. Best wishes, George (MN)

Nope. Guns for show, knives for pro

Yep I carry my springfeild xd 45 acp with my etrac. I see, on average, 2-3 crimes in comission on my way to whatever tot I'm walking to. Not to mention all the weirdos and crack heads. Plus, you are waaaay less likely to bother someone with a gun regardless of how big of a hole they're digging. Since the first burglary I had to call in from the park, I started carrying every time I go digging. However.... The cops searched me once because I forgot my municipal permit for metal detecting, and they found my registered firearm and two sets of thumb cuffs, gloves, a shovel, and duct tape. Needless to say they were kinda suspicious of me. Friggin piglets

just added a new one to the stable... XD 9mm 3" subcompact, also picked up a inner waist band Alien gear holster.....stopped at the range on the way home and ran 100 rds thru her and she operated perfectly

Maryland

The State of Maryland is very hard to get a cc permit, exactly why I want to move out in the future, so for wright now it's just a 31 t serrated, and martial arts , but I know exactly what you mean, wait till the 1st of the year, it's going to get worse, happy hunting, I suggest carry everything legal you can, Earl

Man, lots of paranoia here!! Why go where you feel the need for deadly force in the first place?? I've been hunting (MD) for over forty years and have never seen any serious threats to anybody. Snakes run away, bears run away, people are usually just curious. I don't think I could hunt worrying about carrying a pistol. Live by the sword, die by the sword. I don't think I would hunt with a person carrying deadly force. Just my thoughts, I don't begrudge those folks who carry all the time, I suppose I just don't understand them. It's not that I don't like firearms, I love them and own a bunch of them (rifles), but I enjoy plinking and target shooting. Now if the enemy invades and came up the river I wouldn't hesitate to take a stand, but otherwise I just wonder why some people are so worried.

It's very simple. It's called being prepared. I may carry gun every day of my life and never need it, that's fine with me. But if I ever NEED a gun and don't have it, I'll never need a gun again because I won't be alive to need it.

It sure sounds bad detecting over the water if you need fire arms.
My trusty spade and my pal will do.we always hunt together never alone.
Is it realy that bad over there ?

exactly.... its like having insurance or wearing a seat belt, you hope you never need it but glad you have it when the time comes. just watch the news, bad things happen all over not just in bad neighborhoods

No, it's not that bad. Like I said I have been at it for over forty years and have never needed any kind of weapon or had any bad experiences with other people. Since we in the U.S.A. are allowed in some states to carry firearms there will inevitably be people who will and they will find some rationale or another to feel good about it. People only get shot by other people with guns and as far as I'm concerned metal detecting isn't one situation where that is likely to happen.

safer to carry

I keep a 1911 with 230 grains of hollow point ready for the crazies with a .22 revolver as a back up. If I need it it is ready.

I see the NRA is alive and well:D

I've lived 64 years without EVER seeing a need for being armed.
Take that back, grizzly bears are a known hazard.
Haven't seen many around here tho......

It was gun powder and lead that gave people the right to blame the gun.
