I had the AT Pro out with the 5x8 coil working both sides of the front walk of a house built in 1900. I pulled an Indian Head cent about 4 inches deep and then rescanned and heard the same signal, pulled another Indian Head center, and then did the same yet again for a third Indian Head cent. I've had that happen with zinc pennies, memorials and even wheat pennies a few times, but never Indian Head cents. I've had two in separate holes close to each other, but not in the same hole.

The 1886 and 1891 pennies cleaned up with nice green patina and the 1906 has a nice copper color.

Eventually I moved to the other side of the sidewalk. When I got to just across from where I dug the spill I heard another signal similar to the Indian Head spill prior to digging the first coin out. I thought "No way..." and to my utter surprise, I removed the loose dirt and saw a bright green coin. Except, it was about the size of a quarter poking out of the bottom of the hole. Maybe two inches from the edge of the sidewalk and four inches deep.

The green patina was just unreal. I didn't dare wipe it, so I took a photo (see below) put it away in a zip lock bag, and carried on detecting.

Careful cleaning began the minute I got home. Just for fun, I'll let you all take a guess. I've given a few hints already. I'll give another in the morning.

New Clue: It is a coin intended for circulation. Not a token, medallion, collector's issue, etc...

One of those "pass it around" LC's that Tom_in_CA is always on about... But this one was dropped by the last passer on the way to the post office.

I love a good mystery/guessing game!! I'll go with half cent also - if it rang up like an IHP, it can't be a Largie unless there was other junk in the hole. But half cents are Cooper too...I would have thought it would scream too?? I've never seen one...is it thinner than a Large Cent?

Can't wait to see the reveal! Nice hunting on both the Indian spill and the mystery coin!!

NICE TS. Good one, you got us going. I'll go with LC. Congrats on the Ihp. spill (don't see many of those ) and the mystery copper. HH Mark

Iā€™m gonna guess a Matron Head large cent!

A large cent is the only thing it COULD be. Nice!!!

Not Matron Head large cent, although that's what I thought it was when I pulled it out of the hole. Very similar in size. My find is slightly larger in diameter than a Liberty/Matron Head large cent. The mintage years of my coin and the regular circulation mintage years of the Liberty/Matron Head do not overlap.

Maybe a Half Cent???

Half cent?

Not a half cent. My coin is slightly thinner. The mintage years of my coin and the Half Cent do not overlap, but only missed by a few years.

I'm pretty sure this one has been in the ground longer than we've all been alive.

Thanks! This was up against a sidewalk, slightly on edge, and lots of other targets around. But, yes, what got my attention was the solid, smooth signal in the Indian Head range.

If nobody has guessed by later today then I'll do an air test reading as a clue.

So:

Slightly larger than a a Liberty Matron Head Large Cent
A bit thinner than a half dime.
Mintage years of my coin and the mintage years of the Large and Half cents do not overlap, but only missed by a few years.
