coin cache found by Aquachigger

by looking at the dates and conditions, those were lost very soon after some were minted, so probably in 1830s. That many coins from a small area means they were together in a bag or box in the beginning. They could have been buried up on the bank and washed down. They could have been lost whole crossing when the creek was flooded. All I know is that was a LOT of money back then and would have been a terrible loss for someone. Wish I could find someone terrible loss!

Is it me or is anyone else skeptical?

I love to watch the vid and drewl over all those coins, but I think this maybe an elaborate hoax. First I think it's unlikely for a cache of coins to date over 87 years during this time period. I just can't make sense of it. If I or probably anyone on this forum were pulling coins like that, would you leave the sight? I would be working it night and day till nothing was left. I would do some serious excavation and sift the whole area and bring in some bro's to help and be part of it. This just seems like a fabrication to sell more Garrett water machines.

Anyone else skeptical?

While that could be a possibility, nothing in the video said "hoax" to me. Why wouldnt that range of coins be together? There weren't coin collectors back then. Coins were just coins, it didnt matter the age or the country of origin. The patina and crusting was correct for silver in the water for a very long time. If I was pulling coins like those, I would work as much as I could, then come back when I could. It's not like there are people waiting for you to leave so they can detect that spot. The coins aren't going anywhere. After a couple hundred years, they could be spread over hundreds of feet of river bottom, often collecting in pockets, jus tlike gold does.

The only thing that jumped out at me was that he kept talking like it was a commercial for Garrett. If he is getting paid for endorsment, then why not produce it like a commercial and get paid on topof the fabulous find!

It also struck me as odd that no copper coins were found. Just look at the life span of people back then, it's unlikely for 87 years worth of coins to be together and no I don't think they were coin collectors back then. How would one acquire all those foreign coins, not on Ebay. I realize in colonial times all currency was excepted, but by the 1820's and 1830's I do not think this was the case.

It's also easy enough to use coins with the proper tarnish in a hoax. He mentioned winter is coming and the water is getting cold...I think I would have bought the best possible wet suit and scuba gear and kept at it. I would not be worried about another detectorist, but about the river filling in and shifting. Strike while the iron is hot.

I don't want to think this is not real, but I also want to try to make sense of it. I don't think a rich mans coin collection was discovered.

looks legit ta me.........who's gonna take 187 old silvers outa their collection and dirty them up in the river.....better yet....who has 187 old silvers like that. the only thing i would of done differently woulda been i would of only posted 2 or 3 of them and never said another word about the rest. i'm thinkin it was some sort of payroll and thats why no coppers were found

I'd only ask how so many of these multi country coins all becam located in this cache? Speculate and get back to us on that explaination. Seems a little fishy in a way. martin

I'm a skeptic...

I'll play devil's advocate. In no way am I saying this is fake or not. Just an idea. I'm a skeptic too. I'm thrilled this guy has those coins. Good for him.

First theory: Garrett purchases 187 vintage coins such as those...it's an investment in their eyes. They plan this years ago. They plant the coins in the river. Heck maybe they had artificially sulfured them up in a mucky pond 3 years before the AT pro's release, then make a deal with the guy, saying he can keep the coins if makes a promotional video for Garrett (obviously he wasn't excited enough in the video and he kept screaming Garrett's name like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread...topping it off with a Garrett hat on-top of the coins? Give me a break). Garrett shows everyone that the AT pro can find hundreds of silver coins in one outing and everyone buys Garretts. Garrett makes profits - Man keeps AT pro and hoard of awesome silver coins.

Now on the other hand - he really could have found those coins legitimately and called Garrett before he finished the video and asked if he could be on their website, etc. Maybe he simply wanted MORE people to see his discovery than just some forums. Makes sense considering the magnitude of the find. It is likely someone back in those days would have dropped that range of coins. Maybe a robber on horseback or just a guy carrying his live savings moving across the river. Silver was silver. No ebay, no collectors, etc. The weight of silver is what mattered. I'm sure those denominations were more familiar back then to people than they are to us today.

I want to be a believer for this guy - that he really found those coins. I guess we all find it hard to believe because of the promotion like video. And he didn't seem too thrilled. Maybe just his character...Doesn't matter though. He gets to keep a hoard of amazing silver coins and we're left digging zincolns!

Anyway, my 2 copper memorials.

While I'm jealous beyond words and would be thrilled to find just one of those coins in my lifetime but I believe that its legit. I've watched other videos from him and he has had some pretty amazing finds. Metal detecting is a pretty small community and if he had been bluffing all of his finds over the years it would have been uncovered by now.

The only thing that bothers me is how he so obviously plugs Garrett. It would be more believable if he just came out and said that he was a paid professional by Garrett. I gotta believe that Garrett is taking care of all of his metal detecting equipment needs.

If there was a guy that was so good at research and find that he was pulling major stuff out of the ground, he'd certainly be getting all my best gear for free  That said I agree he should give full disclosure in these videos if he is getting their gear.

Thanks for the kudos everyone and Tretim for "coming to my rescue". The mods deleted your post with my personal information in it. I know you meant no harm. Thanks again...

I watched the video 2x with amazement :wow:

Then following day I found a cache of my own...71 wheats and 2 IH's with my at pro!

The at pro is a cache magnet

Man that has to be one of the best hunts I've ever viewed , and big congrats to you , and an awsome video , thaks for sharing .
