dogpound - Sorry, no. My neighbor said his grandfather had been a hoarder since the Great Depression, so I guess anytime between then and the 80's when he died. Again I apologize, that's a pretty big window and I'm sure it doesn't help.

thanks, i was just curious because the resevoir was created in 1975 so anything buried or hidden in that area pryer to that time could have been moved or under the lake

Within 70 paces of the Lion's Tree there is iron in the earth.
99 paces at 72 degrees the Sun shines underground.
At 9 o' clock the Sun's rays reach out 86 paces.
A book there rests which guides the way, it reads:

At- pro vdi numbers...... Your Grandfather was obviously swinging one....

:lol::laughing:

What are "At- pro vdi numbers"? Again I don't mean to be ignorant but most of this stuff is just way over my head.

There are some large tracts of permanently preserved forest around the Reservoir. I used to hike there when I was younger. Believe me, Warrington may be the suburbs but there are a few secluded pockets of wilderness there, and that woodland is one of them.

It sounds like the key to this is the clue" Within 70 paces of the Lion's Tree there is iron in the earth".

I have an idea about what this means but need to get to the library to check it out

I have to say I am a bit skeptical but will do some reasearch anyway.... who knows maybe there is somthing there.

Anyone else local and interested in looking?

I used to go there with my dad fishing years ago. I'm up in north Jersey but down in the area often. I was looking at old maps and when they built the dam a lot of ground was covered. I think this would be a fall/early winter hunt for me.

So glad to see so many people offering their expertise! My neighbor would be ecstatic. But I have a question. Would someone burying "treasure" place it so close to a watercourse? Seems like it might get flooded over or washed away. Why not high ground?

I think "High Ground" would have been different before the dam was built.

I think it would have to be near the creeks edge for the underground thing eluded to in the clue however I did notice some other ravines in the land while walking around on Sunday. With 280 acres to search it will be important to find the starting point of the "Lion's Tree"

When you go back, ask some of the old-timers who live on Bradford about the legends regarding those woods. Pretty interesting stuff. Great place to go birding too!

It is mentioned that the grandfather was buried according to Anglo-Saxon rules. Some quick research shows that those types of burials are for prominent members of society, important people - maybe a "Pack leader" - certain head of house, owner of large lot of land, a governor etc. Could this possibly lead to a "Lions tree"? Time to dig through some old land records to see who lived where, etc
Time to research the interwebs and books, maybe historical society?

Newport74, make any headway with your research? I've been hoping for some good news to tell my neighbor!

I live in Lancaster, I'd be up for a day of hunting if you know the area somewhat.

True or not, pretty cool. I live about 50 mins from Bradford.. but have never gotten there. I would love to go swing through the woods... but more than likely people would end up searching for my corpse as well as the treasure.

Perhaps this “book” is the Bible and the numbers listed might be Books, Chapters, and Verses. To add to the “code”, the numbers might be in reverse order or transposed in some manner.

I’m not very familiar with the Bible, but a quick Google says there are 66 Books. So, there might be additional clues in the verses.

ebone581 - The forest is a safe place, it's public land and the only people who visit are dainty joggers who would never dream of leaving the paved running path. Although I heard my fair share of horror stories about the place growing up. Just make sure to bring a machete, the forest is so thick with thorns and briars I don't think you could make any headway without one!

Here4now - Cool idea, looking forward to the decoding.

Thanks everyone for your interest.

sciflyer25 - Don't let the historical society give you the runaround, I mailed them a letter too so they know about it.

Very interesting story. When I first read it I was like, "ya right, this is a scam to mess with people." But, you have responded to several posts and it definitely seems you are sincere. That doesn't mean there is a treasure though. Your neighbor, or more likely, his grandfather could have been pulling everyone's leg. I hope it's true though. Good luck to all lucky enough to live close to there that can search for it.

Anyone that knows the area or is somewhat local want to coop on this? I know the area quite well (via driving). I have family that lives VERY close to the reservoir. Granted, the area has been developed over the last 20 years, but if there is truth to this riddle, some of us on here should be able to get something that points in the right direction....maybe?

Jim

I'm thinking if you found the book then the numbers indicate the page, paragraph and word number within the paragraph.
