Dang it! My cat just stepped on my mouse and DELETED MY ENTIRE POST! Ok, I'll start over.

So I recently got an AT Pro with the standard stock coil and coil cover. But I have had people suggest that I get a smaller coil for it. I can see how that would be helpful for trashy areas because the smaller coils isolate targets better, but it's my understanding that the larger coils "see" deeper? When considering what coil to use with your unit, is it a matter of sacrificing depth for isolation and vice versa? Everyone I've seen with an AT Pro has a smaller searchcoil on it and I know there are people on this forum with multiple coils and even more than one machine so they don't have to keep switching between the coil sizes.

My question is, if I were to get a smaller searchcoil for my Pro, which would you recommend: the 5" x 8" or the 4.5" Super Sniper coil? Would it really make enough of a difference to warrant my spending over another $100-150?

I'll tell you, anyone who thinks homeless people metal detect has never looked into the cost of this hobby. :( Still waiting for that gigantic ring that will pay for my detector.

For future reference, the next time that happens, press "CTRL" and "Z" at the same time (or keep your finger on the ctrl key and then press z) and it will undo those changes. Every time you do it, it goes back 1 step.

This goes for many actions on windows computers.

I never take off the 5x8 coil. The depth really is not that noticeable but I'd rather be more accurate than go 1 inch deeper.

I have an ATpro with the original stock coil. I'll be honest, I prefer my Ace250 to the pro... it's really unbalanced and is a pain to swing that much weight.

Thanks. I tried "Undo" and "Redo" and neither worked. I will have to remember the CTRL Z thing.

I want a smaller coil but extra coils are SO expensive!

Maybe to some this may seem like an over exaggerated point, but to me, when I put the 5X8 on the At Pro, it felt like a new detector. A new waterproof detector with the capabilites of an AT Pro is an excellent investment.

The balance was better as well, I can swing it all day and not worry about my swing arm getting bigger than my shovel holding arm!

+1 that has been my experience

GabbityGabby if your hunting in areas with a lot of trash the 5X8 is the answer. Excellent target depth too! I have sold these to many customers who never put their stock coil on unless they are going to the beach. HH, phil

I run the 5x8 and the sniper coil as well as the stock coil. I'd say I run the 5x8 90% of the time. There are a few places I hunt with just the sniper coil. The kind of places that are super heavy in iron trash. For me it's totally worth the extra money. Has it paid it self off yet no but the peace of mind knowing I'm gettin the best target seperation is key. I've just started playing around with it in the water as well and so far I like the sniper for that reason it's hard to pinpoint with the 5x8 and get your scoop on a target with zero visibility. If your tight on funds the 5x8 takes priority over the sniper but I would recommend getting them both if you can. Give me a shout if you have any other questions

Target separation is key and I know ppl scream depth but you wont lose any maybe an inch. I don't use my stock coil anymore, I use the 5x8 90% of the time unless im in a field or a really pounded out area I use my Nel coil. I bought an extra lower shaft so I can switch out coils easier. Its worth the money because that 5x8 DD makes the machine feel totally different and balanced.

Although I don't have one, the NEL coils are wound to be specifically compatible with the AT Pro OR the AT Gold, but not both. You have to specify when you order.

Contrast that to Garrett's offering which is advertised to work on both machines. That tells me the stock AT PRO/Gold coils are wound to be a compromise between the two machines different operating frequencies with slightly degraded performance.

I may have to try out the NEL sharpshooter which would be similar to the 5x8 in size.

I have 2 AT Pro's and I keep one with the 5x8DD and a NEL Attack 15 inch coil on the other.
You cannot beat a big coil for depth and covering a lot of ground in the water, NEL coils are flat out awesome I want to try their sharpshooter coil too someday.

If a beach is super trashy I switch machines and use the 5x8 coil. What I run into a lot here is areas that had docks years ago and are literally carpeted with nails just under the sand.
I love places like this because other folks with other machines have avoided them and left all the good stuff for me. The 5x8 on a AT Pro will pull high and mid tones right out of a bed of nails once you get used to it.

Here's my Water hunter with the NEL Attack and a 14k white Gold ring. I love this picture.

If you've got that problem you've probably got an OLDER version of the AT-Pro with the short upper shaft. You need to lengthen the upper. Look up Khouse here on the forums. He makes the "Gizmo" for them. Look it up. I've got one I'm letting go but am waiting to see if a certain person wants it first. If not I'll look ya up.

Big difference between stock and 5x8. Both in weight/balance and ability to cut through trash. I only use the stock coil in large, cleanish areas. Most of the time I hunt older yards/parks etc. that are very trashy. After using the 5x8 for awhile, you will learn how to wiggle and rotate it around to cut through trash like a knife. I run the 5x8 90% of the time.

I should clarify when I'm hunting beaches in the water I'll use the 5x8 or the stock coil when I hunt the creeks that are nasty and trashy I'll throw on the sniper coil find it's way easier to try to pinpoint around rocks and stuff with zero visibility.

I've used the sharpshooter and honestly didn't like it and I really tried to like it considering the money spent. It just didn't separate and pin point as well as the Garrett 5x8 although I gained depth equal to that of the standard Garrett coil but as I mentioned in the other post..separation is key. I use a Nokta Fors gold now and response, separation and depth are what this machine is about but my ATP is my go to girl when I know things ate going to be dirty etc because it can take it.

I think cats shouldnt be on the furniture anyway, cntrl z undo a step yes that is correct. The small sniper coil is great if your looking for gold nuggets. anyhow it's that I am not a business of selling coils or promoting them. I have a small sniper coil and hardly use it. If you want to be clear about targets, I can honestly tell you that even with the sniper coil at the beach if I don't swing the coil a certain way at a sertain height or degree I will not get a signal. I cannot explain it but I would go over a quarter and just get a good signal in one direction only for that coil.. I cannot understand it. I have the smaller coil just takes longer to do a 10 foot square section of trashy areas. You wouldnt understand until you have done it..... Getting rotten pennies, gren nickels, quarters, dimes, pennies and rusted bottlecaps. Anyhow I would personally choose the larger coil you get better coverage and depth. The great thing is you can go over all the other spots other people have gone and get the deeper targets. If you like to dig... Take a look at one of my finds at the beach and that is the coil I use there. I can honestly say it is lighter than the Garrett 13x9.
