I posted the Martin Van Buren one that I found in March and this one is Zachary Taylor.

I've found two Sacagaweas, one SB Anthony, one Ike, and one Peace dollar (my profile pic). They're cool. Virtually no one carries dollar coins anymore, so they are fun to find.

I have dug 11 of those in a park I detect, my theory is some kid raided his mom or dads coin collection for candy money and did not realize they were $1 coins LOL, I know there has been 12 dug in that same park including the 11 I have dug.

@markinmichigan as @CountyWorker stated they are a commemorative presidential coin, there was a set of them produced I believe started in 2016 they put out 4 per year, while they were being produced, if you look at them they have two year dates on them the first year is for when they were elected as president and the second year is when they left office, they are kind of a deceiving coin because they are really close in size to a U.S quarter, there is at least one of them that only has one year date and that is because that particular president was assassinated the same year he was elected president James Garfield was assassinated 6 months after he was elected to office, I have not found that one yet but I have seen one

They are pretty cool to find

Thats some good finds also i dug a Eisenhower $1 coin also a few months ago, that park I hunt is rite across the street from my house and I have not been able to get back into it because they are currently renovating the whole park and messing up one of the parks I detect, they have it barricaded off and have a couple of guards posted that are watching the equipment they have parked in the park, I went over and ask if I could detect it and was told no, so I did not push it.

Me and this other guy once found a hoard of these things at a beach, some were painted various colors. So many I often got 2 or 3 in a scoop, I ended up with over 40 of them and the other guy got 20+ [I was working it for a while before I called him over] Best we could figure is it was some planted kids hunt gone wrong and was just forgotten.

Has anybody ever seen one in circulation?
Never got one back in change, but where I worked we had a change machine that if you put in a $10 or $20 bill you got it back in these coins. I love using these to pay for things. Hand it to the cashier, and they say I need more than a quarter. LOL I just say look closer.:rofl2:

By “seen one in circulation”, that’s what I was referring to, getting one back in change or seeing one being spent.

In the Wiki that I posted, it says that eliminating the $1 bill and switching to dollar coins would save the taxpayers $5.5B.

They aren't an uncommon find for me. The car wash I use dispenses them from the change machine. Vending machines in schools take them. People use them to take the trains. Slot machines at the nearest casinos in Nevada take them.

I have a bag with about a hundred of them found just with the Manticore so far. I've actually found more dollar coins than I have wheaties with the Manticore.

Same here, found 21 Presidential dollar coins 17 Sacajawea dollars and 3 Susan B Anthony dollar coins in the last 2 years with the Manticore, Legend and Deus 2. I find more of these than Kennedy half dollars and Ikes. Weird. Mine have been deposited at my bank.

Strange that they are so uncommon on the west coast. I never saw a single one in California and hadn’t seen one in 10 years in Oregon until I found the first one in March.

I find them all the time down here in Santa Cruz,CA

Nothing like the "clank" they make in the beach scoop! Also have found them in parks and school yards :cool12:

Now a days though what with Venmo and "pay with your phone" Apps there is just not that much clad around!:(
The examples that Dave gave don’t exist in CA’s Central Valley, or here. All the car washes use their own tokens, there are no trains, to speak of, and the casino machines are all electronic. It’s been a long time since I’ve been inside a school, but I’ve hunted many school playgrounds and didn’t dig a single one or have a hunting buddy dig one either. Not even from a tot lot. Are they used for something on the Boardwalk?

Not anymore sadly!
