I can't remember what the signal was. I started to dig and thought in might be a musket ball? But it had been the wrong signal for that. Then a fishing weight? You'd be forgiven for thinking this was a fishing weight. Except that then I noticed that the eyelet is copper. I cleaned it up a bit and could see that it's hollow and gilded. A button!
Oh, I was also nowhere near water and, I was literally standing on a confederate trench crossing a road dating back to colonial times. The trench was early war, so I think this was lost by a Virginia militiaman? I haven't had that much luck figuring out who exactly dug the nearby fort and trenches. They never saw battle.
I got back to my car and found a $40 parking ticket on the windshield, which is bullshit. There are no markings there and no signs. I wasn't blocking anything, and local police use the same pull-out to run RADAR all the time. I filed an appeal on-line as soon as I got home.
