Hey all, first time on here.
so I was visiting in Gaspe, Quebec. And I decided to try metal detecting the beach there. On the beach theres tall grass that you have to walk through to get to the sand,
but right before you reach the sand theres a little errosion and some hay pushed up against the grass.
I was getting very few hits so I tried my luck going along where the errosion and hay is.
And in the hay, thats where I found most of these, kind of tangled in the hay like a net.
The rest of the findings was in the sand under the hay.
It was all in a stretch of maybe 60ish feet, then the signals stopped.

I ended up cleaning everything besides 4 of the buttons because you could make details out on them. Everything else had no details and was coverd in a thick dark green.

My reason for the post is can anyone help me I.D some of these buttons and coins?
Or if you might know a little history of the items or how they ended up on the Gaspe shores.
Hurricane Fiona? Sunk ship?
Please any Information is appreciated, Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. You're in luck as there are some very knowledgeable folks on here that know their vintage buttons. I'm quite sure you'll get some answers pretty quick. Well done on some great finds.:waytogo:

Appreciate it, thank you!

Well that was a good hunt wasn't it? Looks like got some KG's, a Buffalo nickel and a GW as well as some awesome buttons.

Steve
It was amazing looking back at it now, No idea why it was all in one small stretch of dead grass.. Storms pushing everything there maybe?
Thank you for the info appreciate everything.

Your button with the "58" on it is the British 58 Regiment of Foot. It says "Gibraltar" along the edge. It is dated to 1785-1807. Very nice find.
Hey thank you,
When i found it i thought it was something to do with a police uniform since i wasnt expecting to find stuff like this in Canada.

It looks like that one button had either 13 or 18 on it. That would also be a British regiment of foot. As to some of the plain flat buttons, most of those should date from the late 1700 to around 1820s. In view of the other finds I would suspect the flat buttons are British also. That's an impressive bunch of finds you have there. Be sure to let us know what else comes off that site.

Thank you very much for the info.
Wont be going back for some time as i live roughly 18 hour drive from there.
There is more signals deep in the sand under the hay you have to swing really slow to get, if i had the time id try to clear it out.

So with everyones input i got most my questions answered.
I do believe i found out that 1 of the buttons is from the Royal Newfoundland Reg.

I guess my last question would be why is the 58 on the 1 button on such a angle?
Was it common for those kind of errors?
