Want to start a major contest

Looks like were getting interest. 15 people so far. Need to set a start date. 1 Sep 09 sound good? Prize winners can be the top three. Let's keep the prizes nominal like some Tee-Shirts and a Silver coin. I pledge to donate one. I'd like to see this as a more FUN "contest" than a "we gotta win this thing" ordeal.. This is the Friendly Forum..

Thoughts please..

Bruce

As long as we keep the prizes down, we can charge the regular $5.00 fee. Maybe just an honorary title would be good enough.

How about something like "Dirt Fishing 2009 Champion", bearhold is "The Official Pull Tab King" :spin:

I hope your not starting this thinking you will have no issues or complaints because youd be sadly mistaken.
be prepared to be bombarded with idiotic PMs from people who can not read rules or thrive on drama.
and if your running it Id suggest not entering it. everyone was all for me entering until my team started taking the board then all of the sudden I was being hit daily with PMs saying I should not be allowed to join in or that I was cheating{and some of this was coming from people I considered friends..pretty sad that they wanted to win so badly that they would start trash talking about me behind my back} and was basically forced to stop entering my finds because I was sick of all the drama.

my suggestions: if you want to cut the drama back dont offer any prizes and dont charge an entry fee and block PMs from people who enter. I was averaging 300 pms a week during the contest...it got a bit out of hand.

Thank you for your response Kris. I knew aliitle what was going on but man that must have too stressful.. You got me thinking now and my OCD doesn't need that.. Hope your doing good Bro..

I don't plan on entering, because I don't hunt much anymore. Bruce, you and everyone else should enter and have fun.

I still say we need to keep prizes to a minimum. Also, an entry fee would be nice, but probably not necessary. I will NOT have one cent go toward anything except the shipping of the small prizes, and I will take care of that. It is ridiculous that the last contest cost the forum $200.

Bruce, that date sounds good to me. It will give us plenty of time to get this thing planned out. We need to have some sort of a private chat in a chat room sometime to really plan this contest!

how about..

how about just a general, on-going, nothing but bragging rights, contest. Something like Ed said, but with just finds.
Our local club has a "Find of the Month" contest. This is broken down to three catagories, Coin, Jewelry, and Relic.
Each person can submit only ONE (1) entry in each catagory.
The item found should be found during the previous month.
Then the membership votes on the best find in each catagory.
Then the members vote (poll) on which item they feel is the "find of the month" for each item in each catagory.
This leaves the top three items in each catagory, then of those three items, one is chosen by vote to be the "Find of the Month"
Now.. how to do this in a forum..
eliminate the last step.. "Find of the Month, overall"
at least ONE picture would have to be posted of the item found, to be submitted and the identity of the hunter would remain annonymous, until after the voting (this eliminates to some degree, playing favorites")
It might be nice to some degree to have available 2, 3, or even 4 pics available if necessary, (like craigslist or ebay does)
No voting would take place until the last week of the month, ie. voting would not be allowed until the 23rd or so of each month.
Voting would be over at midnight of the last day of the month.
The winners would be identified with the picture of their finds that were voted "Find of the Month"
Now.. "Find of the Year".. is the from the Find of each month in January following each year with the same voting technique as above. In this forum format.. that would be entirely optional, left to discussion of the this group.
Just an idea..

Wow Dusty, your suggestion "beboggled" my brain!

We always try to avoid Find of the Month contests. We were in a club that had them and gosh, feelings really got hurt.

In my opinion, "anything" a person finds is a "great" find. I'm sure it may get members to get out and look, but there are many members who live in an area where finding something would be a miracle, like in South Dakota.

here is something simple
if you have an even number of entrants divide them into half so you only have 2 big groups. no points givin this can go strictly on quantity, which ever team finds the most stuff wins{trash or treasure it doesnt matter}. each item is counted as 1 so there is no complicated scoring systems and no "they have better/older stuff on that side of the country" complaints. how much do the forum shirts cost? the entry fee can be what ever the price of a shirt is plus an extra $2 to cover shipping..so basically say we have 30 people thats 2 teams of 15. guessing shirts are what $15 or so? so 30 entrants thats $450. now...which ever team wins gets a free shirt so thats 15 shirts so that means you make $250 for the forum and no money out of pocket....assuming it would only cost $4 per shirt to ship?

Now thats an idea!

Been following this with interest. My thoughts are,its an American forum so keep it American,i dont have any issues being left out whatsoever and i am sure the other foreign members would feel the same.I dont mind donating something as a prize, just let me know somebody.

RelicHound's idea about counting everything as 1 point will not leave out foreign hunters and will make it that East Coast hunters won't have an advantage over West Coast hunters.

I really wanted to have another "contest" hunt and thought it would be fun. I had a blast last year and gained termendious knowledge.... But.... by some of the replies from other members here I surmised the thought that this might be more of a challenge (political term for headache) than a fun time. So, I backed off the idea.. Just my thoughts and thanks!

I'll post or PM you if I think of an idea. Since I started MDing back only a short time ago in Jan of 2008 I thought of this hobby as a true FUN hobby. It's quite the rush when your out there in a peacefull setting, all alone and doing your thing and out pops a nice find that you'd never in a million years thought you'd ever dig. That's a thrill that goes unmatched..
