Want to start a major contest

I am still not real sure on how we could moderate the teams; seems it would be bossy, but I want it to be fair for everyone. I guess in the rules, we could say something like:

-If you are partnering up with another member, make sure you both aren't pros. We want to keep it fair for everyone. We will regulate this if need be.

Looks like we have plenty of help this time around. Thanks you guys! Now we have judges that can rule on decisions. ;)

Let's try a Solo Hunt this time. Let the best man win. People in the contest got to know each other and encouraged one another often. It was fun.

My 2 Cents.. Boy, I'd love to find one!! A 2 Cent piece that is..:lol:

oops nm i just saw the second page. lol.
i was starting with this points system but is very rough. plz point out issues or changes you would like to make

post 1900 silver dimes/quarters- 5 points
pre 1900- 10 points
silver halves -15 points
silver dollars -20 points
IH cents and Buff nickels -10 points
wheaties-2 points
large cents/half cents-20 points
colonial coins- 25 points
gold jewelry-20 points
silver jewelry-15 points
clad- face value

IMO the point system worked good last time except Gold rings and large Coppers should have more points awarded. Those are tough finds.

We need to work out a points system that will provide east coast/ west coast hunters a more fair and even scoring system. Maybe with much smaller points increments.

An oversight of the previous contest was that it ignored the relatively large number of foreign members.

I don't have an answer, but I would be against holding another contest that again excluded our foreign members.

i forgot to mention i was working on that. my bad. i keep updating the points system as i recieve suggestions. should we deal with greenhorn and vet since there are no teams?

Well, I don't take an insult if you ignore foreign members. :)
Although I neither have a clue how to include us...this system presented above is of course impossible for us non-US folks. And replacing US coins with local coins is very hard...for example I've found more coins from 18th century than coins from 1900-1950!!

On the other hand, from the 8000 members maybe 10 or so are non-US AND active participants of the forum..hmm..might actually be less than 10. But you can open a thread asking solutions for this particular problem. Maybe someone finds a working solution.

Oh and Brian's point system already has problems between east and west coast. Afaik colonials, while being very rare in the East, are next to impossible to find in the West. Might be the same with other older coins, dunno for sure. But expect that being one thing that will be whin..sorry..pointed out sooner or later ;)

yea, it is impossible to find a way so it works out for everyone. there is just no way so the best we can do is pull input from west coast and international members and work with it. i already pm'ed alan to see if he wanted to help make an international points system if he wanted too. i know you are in a different country. btw i put jewelry almost as high as colonial coins to make it more fair.(we wont get that many colonial coins anyway)

Sorry, forgot about our Foreign members. The last contest was for US coins only and that was not fair to our detecting brothers across the big pond. I'd like to see this one as a "Friendly" Contest without the issues. We are a great group and fun should be number one..

My 3 Cents..

Maybe we could make the points system based on the metal type of coins/ objects found. That sould give some relief to everyone in the conpetition; east coast/ west coast and international FMDF members. This would even give points for relics.

Maybe a points system like this:

Aluminum(Pull tabs only)- .5
Steel/ iron- 1
Zinc/Nickel/Copper(Clad, pennies post 1982)- 1
Solid Copper(Pennies pre-1982)- 2
Bronze/Brass- 3
Silver- 5
Gold(Small)- 5
Gold(Large)- 7
Platinum/ Palladium-10

What if you divided it into classes?

Best old coin hunter: come up with points for the various old coins, and if it was age dependent, everyone could enter.

Best Jewelry hunter

Best Coin count

Best relic hunter

And for people who put a lot of effort into it, best dedication.

You could mix the assigned values in so a jewelry hunter would get extra points for an old coin, and so on.

How about we see what the level of interest is on our Forum for another Dirt Fishing Hunt. Is there any interest, especially since we have many more new members from last year. Perhaps we can start there. A post to see who's all interested in the Gen. Forum??

That definately sounds like a great place to start, Bruce! ;)

Are you going to take care of it or do you want me to?
