Street Tear Out! ***PIC HEAVY*** (Page 5) UPDATED

The tear out keeps producing! I pulled out another Indian last night, and a 1893 V nickel tonight! They are starting on the other half of it tomorrow, so this week could be good! This portion of the tear out has produced a ton of V nickels, handful of barbers (dimes and a quarter(i didn't find the quarter dangit Nebtrac!)), a shield, a seated dime, a bunch of IHP's, a couple wheaties, some headstamps, bale seals that ring up dead nuts as nickels, and some buttons. It's definitely going to be a spring/summer for the books!

Keep at it bro!
Nothing hurts more than seeing concrete going over an area you missed.
Good Luck:D

Hit a tear out and was not getting any good signals. Its good to see someone digging something.

Not all tear-outs are the same. I have hunted many that gave up nothing. If the last replacement was too recent, if the original road was paved over virgin ground, or if any of the previous roads were deeply excavated, then there will be nothing to find.

For this to work like the OP has been recovering, it needs to be a street that was originally dirt (and hopefully for a long time), and you need it to be an old pavement where they basically leveled the ground and poured the concrete or asphalt on top, thereby locking all the good targets below.

Too often though, those old streets (and sidewalks) were dug out, filled with sand, packed down, graveled, graded and then paved. Hauling the old coin filled dirt off to the landfill.

Some times I shudder to think of all the great dirt in my area that has been used to layer out landfill.

Congrats on your finds. Enjoying reading the updates to see what you are pulling out. Keep after it!!! Great chance you got there to score some good finds...

Well, this picture is old...like just after the period of photographs taken by a chisel and stone. In front of the brick building to the left is where the tear out is. The majority of what has been found is on the sidewalk portion that was torn out in front of that side of the block.

Here is a little older picture that shows a better angle of the tear out. The majority of the V Nickels and IHP's have been found in front of where the "Pacific Hotel" once stood.

They didn't pave the roads until 1920. So that was a good thirty years after the first picture was taken. The deepest coin I have found was a whopping 5 inches. It's like they just put sand down and paved the sidewalks! I don't think any dirt was removed back in the 20's, at least on the sidewalks. There is an absence of good signals on the street portion (I think dirt was taken out to pave it back in the day) but still have pulled a few coins from there. Let's just say that apparently people didn't drop many gold coins, 20 centers, or trimes back in the day, only V nickels, Indian Heads, Shields, Dimes, and 22 short casings!

Awesome! Those pics look exactly like many of the early pics of my city. Several years ago they completely tore out and replaced the street in front of our county courthouse. It was full of trash, but it was also full of coins! Barbers, Vs, IHs, etc. The sidewalk were newer and held nothing but the street was awesome. We hunted it every day from ground breaking until they poured the new crushed rock base. Been wishing every day they would replace the rest of the streets around town square!

The year before, they moved and expanded the parking lot behind the courthouse. O - M - G !!! it was incredible. Nothing modern. Silver everywhere. Seateds, Barber halves, V's, Buffs, It was truly virgin ground exposed. I was certain gold coins would come out but none ever did. Lots of relics and tons of bullets and casings (must have been wild in those early days!) I dug everything that wasn't iron, but the only gold was a small pin.

Anyway, I know what you have with that site. Enjoy it and hunt it every moment you have. When you can't find anything else, keep hunting until they pave it. These opportunities only come along once in a blue moon!

Well they tore out another portion today! I'm headed out right meow! Hopefully it produces some goodies....I need seated or barber quarter to match the dimes I found on the other portion of the tear out!

Well hurry up meow! Go get them coins!

The silver streak.....continues! 1923 Merc! Also found a back of a pocket watch that is really really cool! And a toy truck...cast model t tanker with the number 20 on the door!

Sounds like they are starting the other portion of it the beginning of next week...I'm hoping to find a pile of coins. Maybe the Barber grand slam...Dime, Quarter, Half. Or a Seated Grand Slam even. But more than likely the V nickels will keep coming, either way I'll take what I can dig up! I'm still hopeful one of the solid midtones I dig won't be a nickel or bale seal, but rather a gold coin! It's only a matter of time!

I hear gold coins can be high mid tones, like 70 vdi on a ATPro, I don't know what detector you have. Good luck!
