Ascend To The "APEX" (Garrett)

People have brought up Calabash dogging on Garrett, but he also has stated he'd be on any detector company's bandwagon that helped him find the goods or gave him an edge in the field over what he currently uses.

I appreciate TNsharpshooters testing of different detectors and his input on them. I don't tend to see a lot of people testing Garrett, Fisher, or White's on this forum. At least not lately.

Tesoro is gone and Garrett, Whites, and others have kinda been putting out lack luster detectors lately. At least they have since I have gotten heavily invested in the hobby. A Nokta Impact which I own at least allows you to switch between 3 different frequencies. The Anfibio multi is waterproof and is supposedly even better than the Impact. I find it hard to believe Garrett and Whites have not as a minimum offered the ability of switching between 3 different frequencies yet.

The Hoover Boys make a lot of great finds and probably are the best well known ambassadors for Garrett. The thing is I personally don't think they are using the best machine for the job. I also doubt if truth be known they even think they are. They and plenty others here do find a lot of great stuff with Garrett detectors though. You have to at least admit that.

By the way, the tones on the max kill me. The atpro sounds so much better.

Hopefully the apex don’t sound like that

I wonder if there are patents protecting how it can be done efficiently and economically? Garrett could figure out another way to do it, but it's not worth the added cost? I doubt this is the reason...I'm just spitballin'

They don't need to use the best machine because their primary form of compensation doesn't come from their finds, I imagine. Publicity, social media traffic, merch, free products, etc. are probably where the reward is at for them. And if they switched to someone other than Garrett, they'd lose a lot of that "good will" they've built up.

They're also probably top notch detectorists. And a skilled and experienced hunter with a decent machine will run circles around a rookie or average hunter with a top-of-the-line machine.

Yes I figure Kurt and company could make me look like a noob no doubt! I really enjoy their video's!

I believe the intent was "Top Of The Line"

Correct. Sorry, in some of the other hobbies I am involved in TOTL is well known shorthand for Top Of The Line and I didn't think about it not being universally known.

Thanks for clearing that up. I learned something new today! And, I started using a cell phone this week too. Never too old for a good challenge.

Personally i can't see the Apex bringing any new tech to the game, maybe they mean catching up with tech already being used by others.
When an entry level priced Nokta Simplex is as good or (perhaps) better to a much more expensive AT Pro, it shows just how far behind the curve Garrett is.

John had to learn to use a cellphone? Hmm. Apex clue, the configuration is a cellphone on a stick, touch screen and has an app you can call home on......

Actually whites has been putting out simutanous multi frequency machines when the impact r&d guys were in diapers. And the impact is a single frequency machine that can change frequency, not run simutanous... Fisher also has beem producing simutanous multi frequency machines, and still in they're lineup.
I watch the Hoover boys alot, and those guys make killer finds. Why fix what isn't broke? If they changed they're equipment they might not make those killer finds?

Garrett didn't feel the need to produce a new machine every six months, that would be bad money for sales. Most companies including minelab has just caught up to Garrett in the last 2 years, and it took over 10 years to catch up.Not sure Garrett even needed to release a new machine, outside of these forums the At Pro is still the most desired machine out there.

Spot on. One thing the ATP can still do better than any other detector is identify rusty bottlecaps in pro mode. No switching frequencies and all that garbage. It just tells ya.

The AT Pro is popular in the US, the last organised dig i was on was probably 90+% Deus and Nox.
Do the Hoover boys not mostly hit virgin sites, it may account for their high rate of finds.

Actually, it's my wifey who has been on my case to use my cell phone. So far, so good! Easier then some of the medical equipment at work. But..........it appears from the video, that the unit is light. Not sure what the configuration is though?

I don't think the Hoover Boys do well because of their machines. I presume it's because of their skill, access to great sites and the research that they do.

And yes, the AT series may be highly sought after, but not because it's the best. Rather, because (at least in part) of Garrett's great marketing efforts. Eventually, Garrett will need to produce something new to stay relevant.

There is no ( best) detector . I've used them all several times over and no one machine does it all .Garrett has always been loyal to it's customers , and rarely ever charged for repairs even if the machines were out of warranty. Put that with a quality product and people listen, and follow suite. Has nothing to do with the Hoover boys or the best.
I post machines on Craigslist, couldn't get a bite on minelab, Fisher .. Put up a whites or a Garrett at pro and I get email after email. There's alot of bias on these forums, but in the outside world people look for those 2 brands specifically over all others.

Almost no new metal detector hobbyist will know that. Yet, like you mentioned given your craigslist experiences, Garrett is a far more well-known name than Minelab or Fisher.

As for what's "best," you're right there is no absolute "best" detector. But there are some that are "better" suited than others.

For example, there's a reason you don't see the AT Pro or Max detectors widely used by hardcore beach detectorists or the AT Gold by many serious gold prospectors.

Yup, I agree Garrett is not the best raw gold machines. But they make a excellent park gold machine, I haven't found one better..Multifrequency machines are preferred for saltwater beachesfrom what I read, never beach hunted.
All good machines, just personal preference. Myself, I hate charging anything.Id sooner pop in some fresh batteries wgen needed and keep trucking. That's one reason alot of new machines don't get me going.
And everything needs a special adapter for regular headphones. I like my gray ghosts alot. Garrett started that nonsense with the at pro and the special headphone plug in . and every other company followed suite,

I'm exactly the same way. I like things that use AA or AAA batteries. That's one of the reasons why I'm still considering an AT Pro as my next machine over the Equinox. Yes, I'm serious (it's not just the battery, but the ergonomics and form factor, too).

As some of you have figured out by my posts , I'm a hardcore beachhunter in So.Cal.
And I can tell you this with 100% finality : hardcore saltwater hunters here DO NOT use Garrett detectors. That's the bottom line.
