am I supposed to abandon this forum?

forum madness

Guys, nobody is phasing out this forum, we are simply opening a new place with totally different goals in mind, aka more features, forums, features to experiment with. Rather then completely remodelling this place I thought why not have another. some people want simple, others want everything under the sun. If you like it here, stay here, if you like there better, fine.
Choice is good no?

I belong to 4 other detecting forums. This is my main forum, but I visit the others maybe weekly or the old "every so often". I use a different screen name on the others except for one. So, in my case, whats one more in the mix?

It appears the new software offers more possibilities that the old one does not which includes better administration tools, better control of users and posts, ease of use for users, quicker response, and less headaches. Just my opinion!!! ..

:hat3:

Well, comparing myBB to vB is crazy. vB is a professional forum software with dedicated coders, etc. myBB is open source and free. While some open source software has excellent updates, upgrades, etc. it always has its share of problems, per plugin. Open source plugins can allow for backdoors, etc. So beware.

It may be important to mention that the vB software this forum runs is quite outdated. Current vB software is now beyond version 4.0.

Having been inside and using both of these softwares, they both have good and bad, but user maintenance and moderation/administration abilities are far better in vBulletin if set up and used correctly.

just saying.......

Having never bought or sold any detecting equipment on the net, it doesn't really worry me one way or the other.

I can see Carol's point of view though. When they started this forum up, it wasn't planned for it to be a market place.
It can cause a lot more work for the owners and moderators, for what for them is a hobby.

When things go wrong with purchase or sales, they are the first ones people complain too. I wouldn't want the hassle either.

There are plenty of sites to go to if you want to buy or sell. It has been clear from posts in the past, that a lot
of people only join the forum with the intention of trying to sell something. In my mind that is wrong.

From my research, most people who frequent niche sites like this will sign up and join multiple sites related to their interests.

In other words, we call can live together harmoniously.

The site I have been building does have a marketplace feature incorporated with instant pay via paypal and is intended to be a marketplace for our socially connected members and sponsors etc.

Every site has a core attraction. For FMDF it is the forum that attracts others here so they can chat about their hobby and learn from veterans n share finds & meet people etc. Most would tell you FMDF is the best MD forum around, and i would agree.

For our site the attraction is the ability to customize your profile pages and the instant posting to a wall without having to surf forums is what makes us different. We are a designed Social Network similar to fb, FMDF is arguably the best MD Forum on the web.

Is there room for all of the hobby related sites in the world? Absolutely.

Kmart and Walmart have managed to operate in the same neighborhoods, so Friendly and Liberty can feasably survive in the same niche and both will find their core members who utilize the features each forum has to offer. :)

Sometimes I think people focus too much on competition and not enough on embracing what each site has to offer that makes them unique. :)

As for me the classifieds don't really matter. I don't buy or sell on the internet. I did make one purchase from NED when I got my Garrett Propointer with Lesche digger. Every other time mostly Ebay I got burned. So I just said NO MORE. If I can't pick it up & try it before I buy it. I don't buy it. I do have a local metal detector dealer about 10 minutes from my house. His prices are about the same as the big internet dealers. I just have to pay NC sales tax. I like supporting the small shops. He has all the brands usually in stock & if he doesn't he will get it in a few days. Great guy to just go by & sit & talk. Problems with detectors, he's seen them all & information is priceless. Get to meet all the other guys also in the area kinda like me. Even the gold prospectors stop by & chat. This you can not get anywhere else. :gottaluv:

Let's not split the FMDF family

Just like FutureShop has got BestBuy, now FMDF will have its Liberty Forum?

Must have something to do with the classifieds and the latest series of bad transactions as of late.

Methinks they should not split our large and happy FMDF family, they should upgrade to the latest version of vBulletin wich have improved management tools for admin and some added features for forum goers as Post Rating and User Reputation

The feature list can be found here:
https://www.vbulletin.com/index.php?do=features

Even though I don't sell or buy in the Classifieds, I like everyday to receive the new or changed posts about them, I like to see what members are getting or upgrading to ;)

I hope the family stays knit together and not have two places of residence ;-)

Just for the record, your opinions do matter and I plan to do a poll later on (tomorrow), what most members decide is what we'll do. Majority wins. I want to offer some options for the classifieds and everything else forums, sort of a spring clean up if you wish. Maybe add some subforums, update the rules, or remove altogether. Your choice.

As far as the other forum, well, I've been told before that this one has no chance, or doing this or that is just not going to work etc, so I will take my chances and time will tell. Its something I can toy with without messing up this one, test some features, options, if proved successful implement them here.

There is a reason to my madness but perhaps you are seeing the different reasons behind it?

Non are for sale, if that is your concern, though I have received some generous offers in the past.

Well I understand what you are doing to some extent. Which is why I post in both. Doing what is at the Liberty side there instead of here test runs the possibilities here and lets you not have the headaches of them screwing up here as well.
Experimentation is a good thing.
