am I supposed to abandon this forum?

Let me add my two cents here Stewart... Carol and Vlad have always wanted to keep this forum different than all the rest out there. They wanted and have a very successful forum because its main focus is metal detecting which it should be in my opinion...

There are many forums out there that you need to scroll and scroll on because they are loaded up with extra subforums... I can easily post on those forums but I prefer the compact forum here...

Carol and Vlad listen to the members when they request certain things and they started the other forum for all the members who want the extra features... as Vlad has said those members who like it here stay here... those members who want the extra features can now have them at Liberty... I have them both on my desktop so all it takes is a simple click plus a second or two and I am on either...

This forums original purpose was to help the new member just starting out in the hobby and it has grown by leaps and bounds... its a great forum and has great members... there is plenty of room on the net for another forum and its my belief both will flourish...

I understand everything you said, and it all makes sense. I guess the main point everyone is trying to make (or at least the one I'm trying to make)is that no one wants to miss anything. If it was a different owner, then it would be fine. But these are the same owners, so we know that forum is going to be just as good, if not better than this one, which is awesome.

So It's not the "change," change can be good, and the changes I've seen in the new forum are great. It's just that I want a single place to hang out, and don't like having to go back and forth to make sure I catch everything, and I certainly don't want to have to double post.

The analogy someone gave about having two restaurants is not a very good one in my opinion; If someone had a mexican restaurant that I loved, and then the same owners opened a seafood restaurant, I would surely eat there as well if the food/service was as good as their other place.
Now say they opened another mexican restaurant, with a slightly better menu and facility, right across the street, and now some of favorite waitresses, or live entertainment, are going back and forth between the two. Now, I'm sitting at one eating my appetizers served by my favorite waitress, but after that, I got to go across the street for my entree so I can catch the live band.

I guess this forum has been SO good that it's got me spoiled. I've never had a reason to go anywhere else, heck I can't even tell you the names of any other md forums besides Liberty. I just like the idea of having a one stop-shop experience. I just feel rushed now, because I'm at one forum, wondering if I'm missing something on the other, and If I need to post something, I'm conflicted about which one I should post it on.

Bottom line is I'm gonna roll with whatever Carol and Vlad decide to do,because it's obvious that they know how to run a great forum, I would just like to have all the greatness it one place

I agree with Vlad and Carol! My experience is that administrating computers and software are very time consuming tasks and sometimes decisions are made for reasons that are not so apparent. I ran many different servers for a large corporation working 40-50 regulars hours a week plus being on-call 24/7. Software and computers are dumb machines. Good dedicated admins are smarter! Good Job Carol, Vlad and Admins! My two cents and my opinion.

All I can add is I am a member at 4 other boards and have no problem making time for all of them... I don't post on all of them but I like to read them :D

Hate to say it, but since the new forum opened, the new thread count on here has stagnated.

Very little new posts to read.

I gotcha, and I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way as you, and will have no problem keeping up. Maybe I just read too slow

It will be like that until this forum peters out. Since it's the same owners and members on the other forums PLUS classifieds PLUS additional features PLUS additional categories, there is no real reason for FMDF to exist except as a glorious archive.

it's like if you were buying a car and the salesman was all 'yeah, I'll give you a better sound system, floor mats, heated seats and a moon roof for free'

which car would you take?

Yep, this is pretty much how I feel too.

Cfmct-PI, I completely understand what you're saying as well but the reality is that on either forum the existence of the other forum is going to be a detriment in the sense that you now have everybody spread across two different playing fields which, in my opinion, would diminish the quality of both. I also think the restaurant analogy is a bad one...it's more like belonging to a tennis club where you're comfortable and have come to know the other members over years and years. Then the owner opens another place across the street which is basically the same thing but with a few new little twists and he's saying, "Hey the old place is cool but so it the new place". You've got half the members switching over and half the members staying in one place...how is that good? I guess what I like about FMDF is the large member base so when you post finds you get tons of replies. When somebody asks as question they get tons of advice. But if everybody is now spread across two different places it seems to me that the experience on either would be diminished in some way. In my case, I'm not going to bother trying to keep up or post on two metal detecting forums but what that is going to probably mean is half the usual posts here on FMDF. Still don't see how that is good....:?:

As an example I have also belonged to Minelabowners forum for years. Just this year the owner did a massive overhaul and implemented many new features. It was a long process but all the original members still exist in one place and now we've got this cool new forum where everybody can still interact in a new and improved environment. I still don't get the idea of having half the cool stuff in one place and half of the cool stuff in another place. But hey, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed either so...:D

these two guys know the score =)

See, this is totally fine IF the idea is that we migrate to somewhere else, but the thinking seems to be that both forums will run independently (and successfully) and the members will choose which they like better. I don't care which forum it is but I would personally like to see everybody under the same roof. Again, just my opinion.

I agree 100%

I was just saying that is what will happen if both forums continue

This forum is not going to "peter out" its main function from the beginning is to help out new members to the hobby and will continue to be here for that purpose...

Liberty has many of the bells and whistles that the members have asked for over the past several months... this forum here will remain compact...

Have a little faith

yes, but why wouldn't the new member just go to Liberty where he or she can rely on the same fount of knowledge AND have bells and whistles?

We can go back and forth on this sharing our opinions... why don't we just wait and see how things play out :D

You all must make your own decisions...I'll probably lurk at Liberty but when I see it, right now:

Bells & whistles...maybe I'm dim but I don't really see any such that interest me. Usually when I encounter new bells and whistles on any forum, webpage or individual program I start to search for ways to turn them off.

As for the subforums...

Welcome set = same as here

Detectors and detecting set = same as here, except the buddies & clubs. And that is here too in the form of social groups that no-one uses ;)

Beach & water hunting = can find those also in here, if not as expanded.

Dirt diggers = same as previous

More detecting info = again, same things as in here, expanded.

Collectors = Not really interested

Classifieds = Never made a purchase/sale via classifieds in here, not likely to happen soon via either of these forums.

Miscellaneous = with the demise of EE in here, this might be the forum I read most on Liberty.

And when the snow finally melts for a while and I make some md finds, I have to decide where I post my finds. I already post them on one Finnish forum and I seriously doubt I will post them both Liberty and here...and I'm pretty sure FMDF will win this competition.

Just my current view of things.

Voriax

edit: Don't worry. You are likely to get an id or two also on Liberty
