what other kinds of relic finds to look out for on CW battlefield

Of course I am looking for bullets, buttons, breast plates, buckles and shell fragments, but what other items should I learn to recognize and not throw away as junk?

    help in identifying this item

Was hunting in an area where a major civil war battle occurred. This area has produced many cw bullets. It is in an urban area where the park has been a park from about 1940 and before that just empty fields and creek beds. So there is hardly any modern trash to be found except your usual ring...

pull tabs, 3 ringers question Equionox 800

I have my Equinox 800 so one assigned tone break is 16-19 for civil war bullets. but a large old style pull tab rings up a solid 16. so is there any other way to overcome this problem or do I just have to dig all 16 TID's. john

how long did it take to find your 1st civil war relic?

How long did it take you in an estimate of hours did it take you to find your first civil war bullet? Or any other civil war relic? I am using an Nox 800 and have adjusted my tone breaks to make bullets ring out loud and clear. How much research do you do for areas near civil war battle...

hunting creeks for civil war relics

any advice for hunting civil war relics in this type of creek in urban Atlanta? these creeks have high banks about 12 feet or better. They rise very, very quickly due to the urban surrounding building roofs and parking lots. 2 inches of rain in a couple of hours can cause a 12 inch deep creek...

    civil war relics question

I am new to hunting civil war relics but have been using metal detectors in one form or another since 1988. Mostly I hunt parks and old home sites and the beach 2-3 times per year. In a proven civil war battle area (not in any national parks but adjacent private or public property) how long do...

Equinox 800 civil war 3 ringer bullets target ID's and tones

I am using the field 2 setting and my civil war bullets ring up 16-18. Unfortunately ring pulls and square tabs seem to love the 16 Target ID. I put down three civil war three ringers of 3 different caliber on a clear patch of ground. I then put in another clear patch some of my pull and square...

hunting civil war bullets - which AT pro coil to use

I am hunting a civil war site with little trash. I have three coils, 5x8, AT Pro stock and a NEL Thunder 14.5" x 10.5". I read somewhere that the NEL is not so good for small targets. I wonder if a civil bullet is consider a small target by those who made that statement. so anyone have...

    Fired in anger

I finally found my first actual skirmish site. After much research and leg work I now know some of those historical marker signs aren't as precise as you might think. Anyway while hoping to get lucky and find a few drops which I did out in the pasture, but once I got near the base of a big hill...

Need help on Union button ID

Hey guys, my friend dug these Union Army buttons that I'm having trouble pinning down. They were found near a 5ft-6ft deep old well, with numerous horseshoes and nails scattered about, on a bluff overlooking the "Y" -shaped valley formed by the confluence of two creeks in northern Kentucky...

New to the Forum Old Time THer

Hey Y'all on the forum from Acworth Ga. I've been hunting since 1964 when a childhood friend and I dug up a Yankee Box plate near Dalton Ga, along with the remnants of the leather cartridge box and some unfired 3 ringers! Not long after that I was studying in my Ham Radio Class and found out...

I just dug my first Confederate

Ok, so I've been digging quite a few Confederate relics as of late so in my latest video I decided to give a little insight regarding the location where I'm making my finds. Cassville Georgia is a small town in my home county. During the Civil War it was not only the County Seat but it was one...

New here from the Shenandoah Valley. Iron problems.

I don't use a lot of forums so I'm not even sure what's the most effective way or place to ask a question. Probably either here or in relic/coin hunting section. Basically I'm pretty new to the hobby but have been busting my rear for about a month. On average a few hours everyday. Put in 7...

    Greetings From Virginia

Greetings from Stafford, VA, I recently moved from 1/3 acre to 2.4 acres here in Northern Virginia. As an engineer, I've always been curious about metal detecting and this was the catalyst I needed to spend the money. I read everything I could find and made my decision: an AT Pro with Pro...

    Found in Confederate Camp

Found this large copper piece in a CSA camp today. I thought it was brass but after cleaning it a bit I noticed a spot the digger must have nicked and its shining like copper. Hope its off a cannon?? Threaded on both ends about half inch down the hole and smooth in between. Weighs 1/2 to...

    3 Wars 1 Yard

I know the story is long but its worth the read. Finally got permission to do a yard nearby my sons soccer practice. The yard was larger than I had initially thought and it took 3 days to complete the whole site. On the first day, and my first dig I found a 1925 Wheat cent. I knew this would...
