My brother-in-law found this the other day on an old home lot. It appears to have electrical parts in it, but we haven't been successful at finding what it might have been. I wondered if any of you have ideas. It's about 8 inches long. Thanks for your help!

Perhaps from the rear of a train engine, based on the proximity of the wheels relative to its height? And, is it correct that there are remnants of a lip on the inside of the wheels, maybe the sort which holds it on a track?
 
Nice find! You could probably figure out the gauge by measuring the distance from side to side on the wheels. Not sure if it's from the back of the wheel lip, center to center or what. I'm sure there's a train person on here that could tell you. I'll bet it's old, all flat head screws on it that I could see. Hard to tell the size though.
