I found this ontop of my wood vent tucked away, i was wondering if anyone has any info on it, like how old it could be? what it was used for? what handle material is that? there isnt any marking on it, measures just over 9 and a half inches.

I found this on top of my wood vent tucked away.

Looks like a homemade shank.

When I first saw this and you said it was tucked a way on top of your wood vent .. I immediately thought of Godfather II where he dismantled the gun and threw the parts down a vent pipe on a roof

then Stiff goes and says home made shank.. I THINK HE IS RIGHT !!!

where you hunting.. In the Hood :?::?:

Looks like it could deliver a deadly puncture wound, and if that didn't polish 'em off they'd have to battle a nasty bout of lock jaw.

Well, its high carbon steel, with leather, and not off the shelf mfg. and it was hidden for a reason...So somebody thought very highly of this blade at one time...It could be a bonafide murderous blade? Who knows?...

So yeah I'd take the time and restore it somewhat...I'd also practice throwing it on 1, 1/2, and 2 rotations, pulling it out of my boot or waistband effortless and smooth...It looks good and balanced and was somebodies precious at one time...That blade was built not intended to cut bread or cucumbers...thats a Man killer blade...

I'd clean it up and get to know it a little...It will speak to you as to its history if you spend some time with it and listen....

Its a light fast underhanded thrusting blade...or a chicken or cheese chopper...Who the hell knows when it comes to what knives have seen? not many of them get hidden on top of the duct work for no reason though is all I'm saying....It could be a Hatori Hanso?....

I'd buy it from you, or at least offer you something, but I'm pretty well set in the bladed and murdery knife department...Which is what that blade is, or a turkey carver or a cheese cutter..so yeah..I'll offer you a dollar and a Merc dime and pay shipping for that blade..

I see your location so it could very well be a homemade ice pick. The handle looks like leather.

Is it a flat blade?
or does it have a "catseye" shape to the cross section.

I'm thinking it looks like a chefs knife sharping steel.

umm im not sure what a catseye shape looks like, it is flat but not 100% the edges look like they have a angle to them. i weighed it and its 3.2 ouches and it does feel pretty light ! and i did clean it up i got pics for everyone, hard to get good pics of it, but i got one close up of the brass end, i cleaned the blade up, and i do agree i think the handle is leather, its all dried up. yeah home made ice pick, thats a good possibility. lol could be ojs, i did find an area in the backyard, its a crater in the ground that had iron bits, i always wondered if someone was doing some black smithing ?

so i cleaned the blade up, cleaned all the metal, tried to polish the brass up alilttle, blade could be polished some more though. if i had to make my best guess after looking at all the examples of grinds for a blade, it looks like a flat grind to me, if anyone needs more pics or anything ill try and get them, i have a video too when i found it if anyone is curious seeing how i found it, this was found in my own home btw lol, as much as id like to go abandoned house hunting for treasure i just dont think its safe in detroit

It may have been stashed up there to keep it away from his kids.

It does look like it could be a throwing knife or simply a letter opener.

Letter opener was my first thought, though they're usually made of brass or stainless. That's an old one.

yeah thats true! there were kids that use to live here so it could be that!

Not sure they'd of devoted that much time to make a letter opener. Stacked leather handle, brass pommel sure looks like a dagger to me. The ice pick idea is another possibility.

I concur with homemade letter opener, but my question is: What is a wood vent? Like an A/C register? Whatever it is, we must not have those in Florida, because I have never heard that term in my life.

the cold air returns duct work is made out of wood on the sides and sheet metal top and bottom, house was built in 48, but heat is all galvanized vents.
