Auto part of some sort?

Found in a field. Appears to be some sort of gasket material on back. Looks like a fuel cap to me but I'm not sure of the specifics. The center piece turns about 1/8 turn counter clockwise, then back again to it's original position. Seems to be designed that way rather than damaged.

Looks like a oil fill cap from a engine valve cover...Volkswagen maybe?

I would say either fuel or oil cap, but not from a car. I'm thinking from a tractor or some other non-highway equipment.

Given the quarter for scale, it seems exactly right for fuel. Common fuel fill necks are around 2", and plenty of smaller ones have existed over the years, especially in non-automotive applications.

Thanks for all your input! I agree that it is most likely a gas or oil cap to some type of machinery, but probably not a car. The oval shape is unusual, and it's older with "art deco" style lines. Keeping it in my "odd finds" collection.
