Read this. This is why i am so harsh with you.
Not only the decoding is wrong but 2nd pin theory was also soon dismissed by the experts.
Next time remember the internet is like cows liquid manure. It spreads in every direction it want's in a matter of hours...

:toofunny: Sorry but I hope I'm not the only person who finds this completely hysterical where it would get picked up and posted elsewhere without being verified. Gotta love the internet LOL

Karletto, you can be as harsh as you want to be, I don't much care. I think this is absolutely hilarious that a joke from an old GI told to me years ago that was a jab at Mussolini's forces was taken seriously, and made it to online forums. The old man is smiling up there over this one. Have you ever heard of Orson Wells? War of The Worlds? Same principle applies, but his was on a much grander scale.

I got the joke immediately, then was reading the rest of the comments like you had found the solution to this. I was thinking to myself, did these people not read what you typed?

It was a great joke, heard it quite a few times, great application here as well.

All jokes aside, I'm still interested in seeing the stamp on the bottom of the casing...

Also, what's the first character in the last set of 5? (*RSUA)

Yea, I gotta side with Karletto on this one. The "joke" fell flat, and was in my opinion, in very poor taste.

An example would be the ovaltine joke. For one thing, the translation is obviously fake. Yours, on the other hand, could be a plausible translation if the original author were making the joke. I did get that the translation was meant to be a joke - but a joke being made by the author of the note.

Notice also, the "laughing" emoticon in the ovaltine joke. Any indication on your part that it was not meant to be serious and this wouldn't have been an issue.

Notice the lack of other unnecessary details, which contribute nothing to the "joke", but do add an air of authenticity to your translation. Your posting about your grandfather's service, and unncessary "translations" for the QM and the part at the bottom of the note. What do these details add to the "joke", besides making it appear like an authentic translation?

I find it incredibly hard to believe that, at least on some level, you didn't want your "joke" to be believed as accurate. Not cool.

I got it too ... then I wondered if the folks that were thanking for the decoding were just adding to the joke.

Totally hilarious all the way around:lol::laughing:
I do think it is still one of the most amazing finds I have seen on this forum in the last 5 years.
I lean towards European also, with the number 1 and the zero with the line through it.

Maybe...

So... Can we get a pic, or some info on the shell? What type is it?
I am genuinely interested in this... It's an incredible find.

You've got to be kidding me. Someone's outraged? :cuss:

And then the pilers-on. "Yea, totally in bad taste!" Funny stuff. Can't make it up.

You were victimized by a joke.....add it to your long tear-stained list of disappointments. :tissue:

....I just can't imaging staring at a computer screen all spun up and agitated over something a 13 year old girl would blow off with the toss of a ponytail.

Boy, I'd hate to have to spend Thanksgiving with some of ya'll.....

cipher text is typically broken up into 5 letter blocks. If words are written with their true number of letters, it makes decoding pretty simple.

this is sample text -> uijt jt tbnqmf ufyu

That would be pretty easy to figure out.

But: uijtj ttbnq mfufy u

would be a lot more difficult. Granted, military codes are way more complex than the one above, however, the theory holds true.
