Why even think about going detecting?

I will not get (or give) this virus by metal detecting. If I get it, it's because I have to go to the store every few days for supplies. I'm shocked that most cashiers I encounter are not wearing gloves. Gloves would help to protect me if they're already infected and protect them, if I'm infected. Seems like common sense, but it is being ignored.

When I went out to my mailbox, I had this thought. What if my mail carrier is currently infected and not wearing gloves? She could easily spread the virus to our whole town in a matter of days. Indifference is the enemy right now.

I will continue to metal detect in the woods and places where no one is around. As soon as I see anyone getting out of their car with kids, I'm gone. Kids are terrible carriers of germs and disease because they don't wash their hands as often as the should. Just my take on the situation.

Reminded me that about a few weeks ago the mail carrier was delivering the mail and I saw they were wearing rubber gloves.

Seriously hope your feeling better soon!

I know it sucks but i agree if a person is sick, the resting is better for your own recovery and the health of others. But in all actuality now it seems people are in lockdown or quarantine without being sick. Rarely am i approached, so i believe many people can get out and detect wihen not sick and have zero contact with others.

So far had about 10 hours of detecting this year, and no exchange with anyone. Spent 15 minutes im a store today, and seem to have had 50 people within 5 feet of me at various times.

Yep, good point, you got to go shopping occasionally and unlike being outside in a big wide open field it's not as easy to do "social distancing" inside a grocery store, so I wear rubber gloves and a mask when shopping and have seen some others doing the same.

This may be controversial, but I'll be metal detecting if I have time. Open outdoor space is not off limits. It's good for you. Even those in shelter in place restrictions should get out and get some fresh air. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Medical experts said this week that as long as people follow the government guidelines for social distancing — no groups that aren’t direct family members, staying at least six feet apart from others — activities such as jogging, cycling, hiking and walking are important for physical and mental health.

I agree.

Well, off to work tomorrow to clean the public restrooms at our campgrounds. This might be it for me.

Luckily it is hot here. You can wear a glove and throw your mail in the car for a few days. The cars here get to about 150 degrees closed. Nastiest hygiene i have ever seen is at the gas pump nozzles. After watching someone back in the 1990's rubbing a runny nose and palming the pump, i quit bare handing the nozzles. Of course being a retired Plumber we had to worry about things much worse than covid 19. So you learn not to rub your eyes with your fingers or bite your nails EVER!

Very good point some may not have thought of yet, I didn't until recently, but now I wear disposable rubber gloves, if no gloves are handy then grab a few paper towels to grab the nozzle with or if you have a loose plastic shopping bag in the car use that, just throw it away afterwards.

Indiana just got locked down, like surrounding states. You can bet I'll be out hitting the woods looking for bottledumps, as time is already running short. By the end of April, it is so grown over it's hard to find dumps here. I won't be infecting or receiving anything out in the woods, especially out by myself. Besides, the Governor's order specifically states it's allowed for walking/hiking/biking/running. Heckuva lot safer than being in a grocery store full of people, which also is allowed.

Our governor has not locked down South Carolina but today did mandate that public gatherings of 3 or more is prohibited with the exception of businesses.

I can understand where you are coming from Dirt Clown. I have decided it isn’t worth the risk right now due to having Crohn’s disease, so my immune system sucks anyways. Nobody really detects where I go anyways so I’m not losing out on finds. Besides Oregon just locked down today and even if outside exercise is ok, I still don’t want to chance it.

I am doing what the Surgeon General and my local health dept is asking and more. Right now in my area we are not in a total lockdown the parks and golf courses are still open. They have closed the tot lots and have them roped off. We are just limited to groups of 10 or less. My wife and I are as isolated as we can get. With a little planning I can detect or go fishing without being in contact with anyone. It's my favorite thing about detecting and fishing even when there isn't a virus going around. After 10 days I had to go to the grocery yesterday we were out of ice cream and wine, beer supply was getting low as well. I was able to get enough supplies for a couple of weeks It wasn't easy but I was able to keep a good distance from everybody.

If or more likely when we have a total lockdown in my area I will do what I'm told, until then if I can enjoy some outdoors without being around people I will do it very carefully. I'm taking this serious. I do agree with the OP that if your area is locked down and people are asked or ordered to not leave home except for necessary travel it is wrong to violate the law to go detecting.

I guess, im not sure what a "Total Lockdown" is or has been defined as. But I live in WI, and for work cover WI and IL. IL and WI have both issues a Shelter in Place order, and only essential workers can go to work. Both states have said it is fine to go outside and walk in parks. I guess I trust their judgement and guidence for the most part.

I just believe if the state health departments says i can walk in a park and not be a risk to anyone, i feel i can detect in a park and not be a risk to anyone.

Again not sure if the actual "lockdown" is different, it certainly has been used liberally lately.

All of the UK is now in complete lockdown for 3 weeks.

The NCMD is the organisation which speaks on our behalf to government:

"The National Council for Metal Detecting

CORONAVIRUS: IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO ALL NCMD MEMBERS

In the light of the Government's latest instruction that people are only allowed to leave home for a few "very limited purposes" (shopping, exercise, helping others, work) the NCMD is now instructing all members to stop metal detecting WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT until further notice. This instruction applies whether you are proposing to detect individually or in a group.

Please be aware that farmers and other land owners have families and you could inadvertently infect them as well.

FAILURE TO ADHERE TO THIS INSTRUCTION WILL BE INTERPRETED AS BRINGING THE HOBBY INTO DISREPUTE AND MAY RESULT IN YOUR MEMBERSHIP BEING WITHDRAWN

I hope that I can rely on your understanding and support during this difficult period.

Clive Coleman NCMD Chairman."

I would never belong to any organization that thinks they can tell me when I can go metal detecting. Arrogance is never a good trait of any organization or club.

Stay safe and healthy my friend!

As a wise man told me recently, those treasures in your area have been in the ground for thousands of years, they will still be there in a few weeks. ;)

I think many areas have those basic guidelines, and I would think if it is allowed to walk in a park then detecting should be okay also, in a way I'd think detecting might be even safer than just walking around because you stay less mobile and less chance of walking where others are.

The main point is they want people to keep their distance and not get close to other people.

IF they ever did a really strict lockdown that only allowed leaving your property for grocery shopping, going to work, or emergencies, and closed public areas like parks, then my 1 1/2 acres of yard would really be getting a good going over in the meantime, might find little if any good finds but I'd at least get more trash cleaned out of the ground I didn't find before

In the ground : yes. The beach : no. Looks like time is running out here with rolling beach closures.

All our beaches and parks are closed. Will say the stores got smart over a lot of the TP hoarders. What they do is say they open at 9 am. Well they put the TP out 45 minutes later than the store opens. The late crowd appears to buy one pack. The early birds plan to fill up a tractor trailor when the doors open:shock:

Our local grocery store put a limit of 4 cases of bottled water per person as they were having the bottled water run out too fast. 4 cases of bottled water should be plenty for most families to last a while.
