I recently inherited a c1970's Whites Super X500. I think this is metal detector but is different then a White's detector I used in the late 1960's.
It had 2 Eveready 9V batteries in the cases, but both have been drained. Can I use modern 9V batteries to test the machine?
I think this could be a museum piece. All thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.

Yes, any 9V battery. There should be an aluminum pole about 3 feet long to connect the boxes.

sad to say I did not get an aluminum tube, but still going to try to power it on before I decide what to do with it. Thank you for your responses. I know now how it is supposed to look in operation.

I am not able to use a modern 9V battery with this unit. The battery posts attachments are not the same size. The modern 9V posts are too big. I am not going to be able to power on this detector.
I am not going to be able to use it anyway so I think I will look for someone with more skills than I. Anyone looking for one of these?

still not sure what to do with it.

Sadly, vintage detectors and one-off-rare oddities don't fetch any collector value in the hobby. There's simply not enough people collecting. And old metal detectors (yes, the 2-box type as well) turn up at yard sales, ebay, flea markets, etc.... All the time.

And the older units don't keep up with the newer units. Like the TM-808 2-box unit, that Whites was making right up to their end, would be superior to that one I'm guessing.

Don't give up on it. You said there was only two wires to contend with a black and a red. Just get a standard 9v battery connector and replace the old one and try again. You just may be pleasantly surprised. :waytogo:
