What was your first detector?

Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. started finding cans, nails, change, * a1929 Merc After that Merc the hunt was on & I was hooked! Best find with it I think was a1986 High School Ring. Luckily he was from the area & I returned it to him. I found it in 2012. When I notified the school of the ring with name inside they said his wife was the secretary there. what luck! Long story short upgraded to compadre then Fisher F2 & now the F44 that I like the most. HH

Bounty hunter tracker IV, was a gift for Christmas back in 2012 from my in-laws. They had no idea it would turn into an addiction! After a couple years of finding clad and some jewelry, I got an ace 250, and shortly after, an AT pro. Used the AT Pro for a few years, and was introduced to Minelab FBS. Now I use 2 machines (I've owned my share of different detectors) the AT Gold and the minelab explorer SE. Something really epic would have to come out at a reasonable price for me to purchase another machine. Really hoping they make a waterproof FBS at around $1,000-$1,200. I need a dedicated ocean machine that's waterproof. I like multifrequency machines, have always done well with them in the sites I hunt. Just wish there was more brands other than minelab to choose from. Garrett really needs a solid multifrequency machine too. I think the next few years should have some surprises in terms of new releases.

I bought a Compass 77B around 1976 ...I was an off roader and got board and threw the Compass in the back of my FJ40 LandCruiser and have some magical memories . next machine was a garrett deepseeker ads ...then three Fishers a 553D , 555D and a 1260 and moved to Tesoro and never looked back

Mine was a Whites Coinmaster 1db. I worked all summer to have the $99.00 to buy it. Used it for quite a few years until I got a Fisher CZ5. Just the first of more to come.

Magnet.

My first exposure to a metal detector was in the mid80's with a school bus yellow metal detector that my dad used for surveying.

The first detector I bought was a Whites Prizm II, from Craigslist.
The second detector was a Fisher CZ-21.

Now, I'm in the market for a Nox-800

I started back in early 70 . It was an old BFO. Got it at an auction for $15.00 . Heavy as a tank. No disc. A bunch of knobs. No owners manual. Did get it to work. You dug EVERYTHING with a BFO. I found a truck load of iron and trash. I also found a lot of silver coins back than. Not many people detected back than. Did find some gold and silver rings. A few chains.
Used it for a couple years. Bought me one of them Radio Shack detectors you had to put together. It worked, but not as good as my BFO. I finally found a newer one. It was advertised in our local paper. It was an Whites. Don't remember what one. Did not care either. It had a disc. With the owners book.
Over a couple more years I bought my very first NEW TESORO. I used that for many years. Tried some of them high dollar detectors. Some just to heavy. Some played a lot of music that I did not like at all. Ended up buying more Tesoro . Stuck with them every since. Still use them too.
That in my story.
KEN;)

My first detector was a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV.

GKL, when are they going to give you a medal for the great photo-shop pix ??

Late 1980s, Tesoro Golden Sabre II was my grandfather's machine at the time I started to swing. Found my first gold ring with that machine.
That was the first machine I used.

Moved to Garrett for a couple of decades.
Now have Garretts and Minelabs.

Mine was also a RadioShack brand but I used it for a couple years. Best finds were a like new fossil brand watch in a park and a 1943 30-06 round, never fired. It was made in Europe for Americans during the war. Found it in a yard.

I'm so old , it was before detectors even came out ! As a child , 2 dowsing rods held in each hand. When they crossed , it was time to dig. Not very good at pinpointing and my holes were very large !

You had dowsing rods? Why, when I was a kid we had to metal detect using our toenails! And we were glad to have 'em! To detect, you had to walk barefoot through the park (gridding was really tough!) and when the toenail of your pinky toe (the most sensitive, as all coffee tables know!) started to turn downward, you had to start digging. We had to grow our pinky toenails really long, back then. The longer the toenail, the more sensitive.
We would train all winter, walking barefoot over Lego pieces (and back then Lego pieces were made from real broken glass, Fringies!) to sensitize our feet! And yeah, they were REAL sensitive when Spring rolled around!

People used to hear us coming for miles around, with our feet going crunch! Crunch! Crunch! from the embedded Lego fragments!
