I recently gained permission to detect an 1800s Startch mill in the woods not far from me . Only found a spoon and a button but the button turned out to be a military academy cadet button (West Point)

Nice !! Looks like the 1851 early variant with rope border, also looks like it may be loaded with gold gilt. I'd drop it in some lemon juice for a few minutes just to see if there's gold. Tight button, but could be a real beauty.

Very cool button. That old mill site sounds great as well. Good luck on you next trip there.

Nice find. If you take a pic of the back we can narrow down the manufacturing date.
Cleaned the back the best I could. Iā€™m very happy with the front. Thanks for the lemon juice tip Fredneck

Wow !! Loaded with gold as I stated. While it's not the early variant, having a rmdc backmark, usually a sign of CW or earlier, this one could be post CW with the HV Allien & Co mark. Congrats on a real beauty :hi5:

I have a couple of very early West Point Buttons around 1812 gold is still on them. I dug them top of the mountain at old farm sight. The other one I almost tossed it in till the Curator at the West Point museum told me it was pre civil waršŸ˜®! Odd enough it came from an old hotel just off the base. Cool finds
