I've been wondering bout this for a while now so thought I'd ask y'all . Once you have searched a spot like your local spot what do you do then and asking because how the heck do you stay busy finding places to go I haven't even started and I feel like I'm s.o.l . Already Mayers done said no but I'm not done w him I'm doing my homework on my city ordinances and laws regarding detecting I actually think he's just let his tie go to his head.. but anywho do you research the same spots over and over and over or what?.. p. S I did get conversation guy to let me search today course he said yes I came up empty handed but dig what seemed like 10 foot hole looking for that dang beep nothing.. lol

Door-knocking opens up an entire new world of detecting. That, and road trips outside your regular territory.

.... Already Mayers done said no but I'm not done w him I'm doing my homework on my city ordinances and laws regarding detecting I actually think he's just let his tie go to his head.....

startingover-2day, If I'm understanding your post correctly, you : Asked the mayor (for permission to detect, or to clarify if Ok or not), and the mayor "said no". Yet you've subsequently looked up muni code and park rules for yourself, and you think he's mistaken. Have I understood your timeline of events correctly ?

If so, you are now the latest member of the "No one cared UNTIL you asked " club. :nono:

If you were skittish, why didn't you just look up said muni & park laws/rules/codes for yourself, from the start ? And if there was nothing that says "No metal detecting", then presto : Not prohibited. By asking a desk-jockey, then here's what happens :

1) the mental connotation in their mind, of a "man with a metal detectors", is : Geeks with shovels & Holes. So they simply say "no". When odds are, they probably never gave the matter a moment's thought , nor would have cared, nor would have noticed you. But shucks, now they give the "safe answer".

2) And the mere fact that you're standing there asking "can I ?", merely presumes their princely say-so was needed (lest why else would you be asking them ?) And presumes that something is WRONG with your activity (harmful or damaging, etc...). Lest why else would you be asking ? (no one asks to do harmless benign things). So you've merely stacked your own deck against your own self (set-the-stage) by the mere notion that you need to ask, in the first place. Why ? Would you have asked if you can fly frisbees ? (might poke someone's eye out).

So as you can see, your "pressing question" fetches the "safe answer" in places where, quite frankly, probably no one ever had a problem before (unless you were snooping on obvious historic sensitive monuments, or somehow being a total nuisance or eye-sore). And worse yet, this is often how laws & rules GET BORN (to "address this pressing issue " that has been posed to them). Or now, when that same guy passes the park, he sees someone else, remembers the earlier inquiry, and starts booting others.

Unless I misinterpreted your post, then forgive me. But if I have it right, then : Let this be a lesson. If no laws or rules said "no md'ing" (that you looked up for yourself), then presto : Not prohibited. Just keep a low profile (go at off-times, if you intend to do nice manicured turf). Don't be in the middle of deep holes if busy-bodies are staring and watching. Avoid obvious sacred monument and archie conventions. And now : Go find some silver and gold to show off :)

The town near me is no detecting! Some county parks are posted also. Asking permission for private property is almost your only option here. But it’s done me well. You may need to travel to the next town or two if you want to detect in town.

Good luck.
