Don't let it get wet! Maybe a lith dry brush. I use a solution of Elmer's glue and waters to soak and preserve. I recently did a pretty toasty USA button that way.

Thinned Elmers glue is a good fix. I also use hair spray. It's water soluble, plus it gets way into the pores and crevices of the flakey pewter to hold it all together. I have flakey Rev war pewter that's held up grreat for 10 years with hairspray.
