Pulling out the goods with a White's Surfmaster Pi **UPDATE** Cleaned Up 14k Band Pics On Page 2 **

Is that ring really gold? It looks like it may be plated. Looks you polished the plating off and some is still left in the grooves.

White gold isn't "white". It's typically gold covered in rhodium plating. If you take off the top layer, the result is a yellow color. The fact you've taken off the top layer suggests you might have some other metal under there, such as silver.

There are some pieces, though, that are mixed with palladium or platinum that produce the white color you're seeing. It's definitely worth looking into more closely.

Best bet is to scratch test the white colored metal. If you get a solid 14K test, then you've got a true "whitish alloy". Rare, but not unheard of.

Cheers!

You can also do a specific gravity test in water - very easy and accurate on plain bands such as this.

Thanks for the advice and concern guys but don't worry, I've been at this for a long time and have done my due diligence :D This one is indeed 14k gold. White gold when it's been in in the water for a long time will tarnish to a yellowish color. Over the years I have found several white gold rings that have been heavily tarnished by the elements.

Most white gold in Asia (18k) is just that.. white gold . Some of the really old white gold finds might have places where the yellow is leaking through. But if you look at it under a loupe its leaking from the ring.. not through plating.

Maybe I am just old school, but if I am not selling them... The tarnish, micro-marring, the things mother nature did to them adds character...

Wore one that was sand burnished it almost glowed... Actually had some guy comment on my "cheap" ring when he was wearing a "super metals" band...

Will definitely get more than melt for that.. it's a nice looking ring. The swirls give it character

Thanks Steve!, Just a little more cleaning and i'm putting it up for sale, definitely not a melter
