Pirate Gold of Adak Island

would you personally detect it?

Like I said in an earlier post I was on Adak for 13 months. Never heard this "tale" when I was there. Did a good amount of off base camping when not on duty.

Do you have a credible link to a DOD or official document on the coins found during WWII?

AS some one who has actually been there , would you detect it if given the chance ? Would you of reported any finds, if you found one of the cans with gold coins ?

The gold coins

Since the pirate was Russian and he was illegally hunting seal , i wonder if those gold coins would have been gold Russian coins , not heard any mention in the articles i have read as to what nationality they were. Sure, there would of been a big market for the seal skins in Russia legal or not. Be interesting to know what type of gold coins were hid there. Been trying to find some military account of the finds , i imagine in 1943 they would of tried to have kept it pretty quiet to keep the troops from spending all their time looking for gold , considering what they were paid back then.

I may be mistaken, but I thought the gold coins found at the end of this series were American and the value was enhanced as they were collectible?

I haven't seen the series yet was going by the articles i have been able to find on the history of the treasure, the dates of the 2 finds from the American service men and date the treasure was buried. Sure any gold coins from that period would have increased a lot in value though. I guess a lot would depend on who he was selling to since he was dealing in illegal goods . Still trying to find any reference to the 2 military service men finds but imagine there is a reference some where.

The coins from the end of the series were handed over to the Mayor ....I gather the team will be going back next season and once the hunt is eventually over, there will be a divi up...I think the team are due 10% of what ever is found...

Should be good for bringing some tourist to the area , especially if some of the finds go on display .

To be honest, that's what I think is the real reason behind the show...I don't think the place is ever going to be a tourist hot spot, but I get the impression the mayor is desperate to stop island life simply fading away now the military have gone...

Smart move on mayors' part

With the population shrinking i think it is a smart idea to bring money and tourist in , not the kind of place most tourist would normally want to visit. If they opened the old military base up to metal detecting might even get more. I am much more a tropics guy myself, would like to spend some time exploring south Pacific battle sites. So many places especially in the Philippines to explore and visit than i have made it too so far. Especially want to do the day long tour of Corregidor (no detecting allowed there what a shame ) Cebu the next island over from where we have a family home had around 7000 Japanese surrender ( sure they buried some valuables before coming down to surrender . video of that surrender https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...62C17739DDF22AD1E1A562C17739DDF22AD&FORM=VIRE

Thanks for posting the video of the Japanese Surrender on Cebu. That was really something. Wow, imagine the stuff that could be detected there!

from what i understand about 7000 of them waited up a big hill to surrender , while waiting they had time to hide anything of value, they thought the Americans would take.
