Pinpointing in mineralized soil??

I will often switch sensitivity while trying to find my target with my carrot. Going from 3 beeps to get in the ballpark down to 1 beep setting to find the target.

It could have been such a small target that you just didn't see it. It amazes me sometimes how small a target these gadgets can find.

My Garrett Z lynk carrot will pick up individual birdshot pellets in size 6. I generally shut down the Propointer after getting within a single beep of the target and sometimes even between beep stages if I need to do more work like cutting roots or prying out rocks to close the distance. I do this to save on power, especially if I'm down to alkaline batteries. I have been aghast at the cost of Energizer Lithium batteries and sometimes I experience difficulty finding them. Are they becoming politically incorrect or become more dear for EVs or somesuch? I was usually getting them from Wal-Mart but they always seem to be out often lately.

Thanks for commenting, AJ. I tried going through the dirt carefully, but the carrot kept indicating something was there. Very odd - but then I'm still learning so anything is possible.

Thanks for commenting Rock Jock. I never would have considered birdshot. The subdivision I live in is about 24 years old. My house was built three years ago on an undeveloped plot. The builder bulldozed a small copse of trees to level the lot. Behind the house is a big pasture and the subdivision arose from the farm that once owned that land. Using my other PRC detector, I found old barbed wire about 18 inches down, so that probably came from the farm at some point. Sorry, a long way to say that birdshot cannot be ruled out, I guess. Can't say anything about the batteries as I'm using alkaline right now.

Just remember AJ…leaving the PP on CAN affect the main machines performance, depending on the machine and circumstances. MANY times I’ve switched my PP off or on and my main machine goes “burp”. No matter the machine, the carrot has done it with the CTX, Explorer, Equinox, Deus1 and 2….just be aware. It can be monumentally frustrating when the ground itself is responding like that, it makes for a very bad experience. I hate to say it, and while I love my MI-6 the best PP I ever had was the Garrett PP2. Very simple and reliable operation, but not waterproof. Still…as far as speed of recovery, best yet and I will be getting another.

Hello everybody, this past weekend I did a two day metal detecting event at an old farm property. I experienced what I guess for the first time a very mineralized ground...Finding the targets with my detector wasn't that bad (had noise but targets stood out) but when I got down on one knee and tried to use my Garrett carrot I had a hell of a time trying to find my target. It was falsing??? Until last weekend I never had this issue, I can only think it was the soil. I tried grounding my pinpointer on start up but that didn't help. I left the pinpointer on in my left hand as I walked around swinging my detector with my right hand.

Any suggestions if I run into this problem again?

Do you remember if when you got over a target that you would loose the signal but if you swing faster or slower it would come back in but not at the same speed as when you first pinged it?

My issue was with my Carrot pinpointer. I was able to quickly find my target after I dug my hole with my hand trowel. I was getting multiple signals in the hole I dug.
