I haven't posted in a while but near this site has produced lots of late 1700s items and early 1800s as well. There are few junk items but it was farm field up until the 1950s. I am trying to figure out the coin. I have pulled a few large cents, a KGIII, what looks like a state copper and the one in this photo. It is thin. It looks like the bust is facing left and a little like a KGII. It will loose all its coating once it dries so I got the pic after soaking some. Thoughts?

Also, what is the big iron? I thought it may be a hitch of some sort but it is really heavy iron and a large ball. I put it next to a paint stick for size. I don't see a whole in the bottom of the pin but I have not taken the rust off yet.

I couldn't make anything out in the first photo but there plainly looks like an eagle with spread wings to me in the second photo of coin.

That other object sure is intriguing. Neat finds.

Thanks, I may need to upload another photo. I may have uploaded the bust side twice. Just one is wet, the other is dry.

Congrats on the finds.

My wild guess on the iron is a clevis pin.

thanks, I have found far better in that area but these were the few I wasn't sure of this past week. I need to take a photo of all the finds in the small area. I have some other iron pieces I think will make it through electrolysis. So many were too rusted and just crumbled. I thought this iron may have been a hitch of some sort for a wagon or something. Not as easy as the mule shoes, horse shoes, ox knob, and tons of hunting bullets I have found. I even pulled up a full plow tip.

So, as I am looking, could this be part of a "Bar Shot"? I just googled it and am looking into it. This site is near water on the bay but didn't think anything battle wise happed near this spot.

What about the end of a bed post or railing post? Like this41aWYUz275L._AC_SY400_.jpg but obviously much older? Not sure on the copper, it's tough to make anything out unfortunately, other than the left facing bust...

It is pretty solid. I thought a hitch of some sort, bed post like you mention, or top of a gate post. No electric close by so not part of a lantern post and not on a street. I have dug many items from the late 1700s - mid 1800s within feet but it was a farm as well. Water is in view but no military action as far as I know. Would people have "bar shots" for protection from incoming vessels? Prior to woods, it was farm land so it is possible if shot from water, it could have missed and landed but I am thinking it wasn't shot (Although, the other end is missing). The other theory, if a bar shot, would be someone kept as it was close to where a home site was. I may post on fb as well to get some ideas.

Looks too small to be a bar shot. That thing is only about an inch and a quarter on dia, the ball end that is. I believe bar shot had half a ball fixed at one end and the other half ball had a hole in the middle enabling it to slide up the shaft.

I will need to run the electrolysis tank on it. I knocked off a bit of rust as well. Plus I will weigh it out. I don't want to be that guy that thinks it is one thing and finds out it is an old dumbbell. I googled "bar shot" cannonballs and more then half looked like mine with a ball on each end. However, I know it may be others just thinking it was possibly and could be wrong as well. Do you know if there would be a size difference as I have seen cannons hold the size of what I have on ships (smaller then land cannons)? One of the sites said about 10 lbs total for the whole thing. Here is a better photo of it for you for scale.
