I hunted an old school built in 1930 which was originally a high school but now serves as a middle school. I found the usual clad coins, $3.13 in face value, and a pair of small sterling silver rings. The one with the 550 on it is from Mexico and the other is marked "ROMA" so I'm assuming it was made in Italy. Total weight of the two rings is 4.53 grams.

Way to go Ed… you and Sue get the clad and all the silver rings you can while the weather is good. Great seeing you both again at the MTHA Silver Search hunt on Oct 2nd.

I think I could possibly know what school you mentioning , if it is I dug there thinking there should be some mercs or Rosie's at least ...but I was unable to find a single silver coin there got a couple buffalo's..but that was it for older coins ....it did find the nicest 6 diamond 14k ring there a few yrs ago..
But can't hate when silver rings pop out of the hole !! I wonder what the 55 or 550 means?

Thanks Jim.....It was good seeing you also and we both had fun as we always do. We'll get whatever we can get while the weather is good. We figure maybe 8-10 weeks until the ground freezes.

I've hunted this place probably 6-7 times and have come up with only one silver coin,a 1944 wartime nickel. I have dug sterling there on past hunts.
I have no idea what the 550 on the ring means. :?: I'm also thinking that it might be an SSO or if you flip it, it could be OSS. By the way, which school do you think it is?

It sounds alot like the one in jc?

No, not the one in Jewett City. I've hunted the old Jewett City high school for a long time, starting back in the 1980's and have only come up with a few silver coins there. I hunted what used to be the football field and that's where I got the silver. I dug a lot of clad from the grassy area in front of the school and I've hunted the nearby baseball field with not much luck.

The only silver I've seen come out of there was a ring..it's crazy how the place is picked clean of coins

I've been one of the people responsible for picking the place clean  but I'd bet that there may have been someone picking it clean before I started hunting there. I've also hunted the old Plainfield High School located on route 12 and NEVER got ANYTHING silver out of there, nor did it give up much clad. As old high schools go I had my best luck hunting Norwich Free Academy back in the early to mid 1980's.......more than 30 silver coins including an 1893 Barber Quarter. Unfortunately the city of Norwich banned metal detecting about 25 years ago or so because one of the town's coin dealers got caught hunting the historical Norwichtown green and that angered the "powers that be" to the point they banned detecting everywhere within the city limits.

Congrats on the sterling and clad haul. I have only dug a few rings this year including the junk ones. Good luck, Mark
