Not your everyday find !!

hssea's link to mpm says they only have 20 examples of the sawtooth base. Hopefully a 5" point helps them learn something new.

Finding something and donating something to a museum has to be one of my most desired achievements. That would be so, so, SO cool.

Yeah it is... I donated 1500 arrow heads to a local museum and 500 more to a Elm. school. It's a good feeling to know, that so many people can see what you've found for a long time to come.
I have no regrets in doing so....

I've never seen exactly that style before, really cool. My brother found a copper celt axe head up here in Northern Michigan and contacted some museums/colleges and such and they were nothing but rude for the most part. They demanded to know where he found it and basically said people who metal detect ruin things that should be left for preofessionals. He responded by saying, "I was going to donate it to you but now I'll sell it to fund more metal detecting equipment" which he did.

I believe what you have is a Spearhead. Don't clean it in any way! What you have found might be a Copper Culture Artifact. The natives in your area started using Copper to make tools around 5000 BC. Check out this site.

This is true I remember seeing some else in the MI area find a coppper spear head, and they found out it was OLD from a local university.

Sorry haven't been on in lately, been busy with my other hobby and hubby has been very busy at work.

Update: the "professor" (King Tot--:no: LOL) is going down to Michigan State on the 30th.

I will definitely update what they say.

Sooo does anyone think it looks like these: (we sent a pic to another museum and they sent back this link)

I don't claim to know anything but, I don't, yours is not anything close to that stuff in the link. That stuff is modern in contrast to your find. Not even the same people.. From what I have read, the bronze era folk pre-date most of what we know anything about lol..

I agree. The picture in the link they provided clearly shows how thin those points were. Our spearpoint is very thick and looks just like the one under "sawtooth" projectiles--third one from the left (if you scroll down a bit on this link)

Yep, like these...

It's been a very long time since posting on the site. We are totally snow bound !!! Our seasonal snowfall is over 105inches with about 4 feet on the ground. Hopefully our meltdown will start next month.

Anyway...update on the spearhead. We finally have it back in our possession....seems no one wants it, so we will be the care takers for now !! We attempted to donate it to the NMAI...they turned it down, stating they had to many artifacts already.

Our local professor did go down to Michigan State but apparently forgot the spearpoint ( he did have some pictures of it though). Anyway he is a amazing and interesting history professor and we offered to take him to lunch sometime. The archeologist did say that the spearpoint is possibly from the copper culture. I'm guessing without seeing it in person that's the best ID we are getting from them.

Only other update is that MD is no longer allowed in our city. Thanks to one out of town individual who came here sometime last summer and decided to MD in a historic site. He then proceeded to take his historically dated find to a casino and brag about what he found. Unfortunately he bragged to some wrong people. .... who went to city council and they have been working on a city wide ordinance. Of course it came out in the newspaper.....so we are allowed to only "surface hunt, no digging allowed !!!". Thanks to one individual !!!! ....he runined it for everyone else !!! ....to bad he just didn't stay home !!! Unfortunately between these stupid reality shows , MD's who don't cover their holes and those who care less where they hunt....now my hubby and I are limited to surface hunting only !!!!!:mad::mad::mad:

....sorry for the rant

A truly great find!! Did you get a receipt off of the professor, if not I would encourage you too! Unfortunately we live in a society where even those you think you can trust you can't always! Just a precaution! In due course I will be interested to know the approximate date of manufacture?

Wow!

If that head is 5000 years old, imagine the stories it could tell?!

Please keep us posted even if it turns out to be a repro from the 1900'!
