I've already said I don't like you and took "cheap shots at you" cause you attacked the the forum. I might seem defensive but it's the Internet of course it's gonna sound defensive in a thread! I believe it's a artifact based on where I found it. I know it's possible it could be garbage, probably isn't a musket barrel, but I have spent well over 100 hours sifting dirt, digging a 14' diameter pit which was 12' deep and metal detected this place to death. I remember where nearly all 1400 artifacts were recovered. So I should have a pretty good idea if its trash or a artifact! Capeesh?

Haaaa you are my hero!!! Happy diggin

No offence brother man, but that is as much of a Seminole war artifact as many of your other "Seminole" finds...

Just a pipe someone kept under the seat of their truck, probably threw it in your woods to hide it because they killed someone with it!!

Keep at it!!

<*)))>{

After looking at it again, there is no way that it could be a musket barrel. It would be 1.10 caliber!! That said, it still could be something period, not sure what it could be. Good luck on figuring it out!

yeah i dont believe its a musket barrel anymore based on what you guys think but yeah its gonna take a lot to make me thinks its trash.

Not 100% sure, as I am not a musket barrel expert...But if it is a musket barrel, it would suggest a super-large caliber round, I'd say close to 75-80 cal. Judging by that theory, I'm guessing it could be from a Musketoon. Maybe try a web search for larger caliber bullets/round balls from that era and see what pops up.

Again, I'm no expert. This is just me being optimistic for you, and trying to figure out what it could be, not what is couldn't be.

Hope this helps. HH

Does the round opening look like the edges are slightly mashed? The new pictures seem to show some mushrooming on the edges.

I don't mean to sound negative either but when I first saw your original post the first thing I thought of was an old iron survey property line pipe. I've seen them about that size and also where the flattened one end a bit so it would go in the earth easier.

I'm no firearms expert either and I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so this is just a guess from the peanut gallery.

so does that mean the chuncks of iron i've found on my landlords property are from the 1800's because i've found 1800's buttons on his property ? The masses say its junk, until you're able to find a marking or w/e that can ID it as a musket barrel, me and everyone else is saying its a damn pipe. Its rusty and modern pipes aren't made of something that rusts? guess what its an older pipe.

Antique pipe

It's a water pipe from an 1840's Seminole War encampment. You didn't know they had modern plumbing back then did you? I've tried to think of any item it could be that would be contemporaneous with other artifacts you have associated with the 1840's. I can't personally think of anything. The closest match I've seen posted is an old iron survey marker. Good luck.

I agree!! It is not from any kind of musket or firearm!! It is junk!! It is not an artifact of any importance!! I still don't understand why so many folks seem to want their old pieces of rusty iron to be something cool, they are almost always just junk. Iron was used for many years on water supply lines and often about the size posted here. Iron or steel tubing was used in farm equipment, old beds, and a plethora of other things. If someone thinks a rusty old piece of water line is cool god bless them!! I read a post recently about someone wanting to do electrolysis on a rusty old barrel hoop!! Bless them too!! I throw all that junk in a dumpster.
I also agree that just because other old relics were found at the site doesn't at all mean that everything from that site will be related or that old. Gimme a break!! If an old round lead ball is found, even near a battle site there is no way to prove that it was used in said battle. People hunted in pretty much all battle sites before and after said battle, so all one can say is that they'd found an old round ball, it really has no historical importance that can be proved. Junk!! Into my melt pot for fishing sinkers. There is a definite Rev war depot site not too distant from me, and the site was used as a dumping ground by locals for over 150 years after the demise of the depot. There are TONS of old iron junk lying all over the place and in the ground and none of it has any historical significance, it is JUNK.
I am not trying to be mean here, just realistic! Like I said, bless those who like that stuff and usually nothing anybody else says will change what they have already conceived as fact. One of my favorite sayings is "some people make the same mistake for forty years and call it experience".

But see, with your stuff you seem to imply that other garbage was found there, whereas the site i'm at has had no trash whatsoever. The part of Florida where i am is highly undeveloped and didn't have many pipes.

You guys says trash, i say artifact. Ok. Agree to disagree. I wanted to know if it was from a musket, you guys say no, so i believe you. Thx.

I agree that Donney is perhaps a little too enthusiastic in some of his find identifications. I sometimes suffer from that problem myself. I'm sure most of you would have been perfect at this when you were 15 years old. I'm fine with giving an honest opinion and correcting people where necessary. I see no reason to be harsh with a newbie (especially a teenager). I think we can all laugh about this and provide our opinion without being rude. Donney, you don't REALLY still think this is an artifact from the 1840's do you?:D

Screw this. like i said, my question was answered and thats what i wanted.
