Good evening, my names Dave from Greensboro NC, I am retiring in another week and decided I wanted a hobby that myself and 14 yr old son could do together. Been watching shows on youtube like Dig that Beep (like very much), Gigmaster, Hoover Boys, etc. and decided that metal detecting looked fun. So, I decided to go get the gear to see what kind of adventures I could get into. :). Being a genealogist history has always interested me, so why not give it a shot :). Nothing cooler than watching the Hoover Boys pull a hammered silver of the ground from the 1600's :) or a rare colonial coin. Heck, I'm happy when they find an Indian Head Penny or something shiny. Currently, I have a Equinox 800 with all 3 coils and my first permission in the bag. I'd love to find a buddy or two, (rookie, or Tony stark level hunter LOL) who wants to get together and go find some stuff :). One thing I'm curious about is permissions in City of Greensboro for medians, spaces between sidewalks and the road, etc that the City owns? Someone mentioned using the OnX app to find the spots but who would give the permissions? I've not had much luck calling around but then again, no one has told me no either?
Anyway, glad to be aboard. Hopefully, we can have some fun and find some history along the way. :) Peace. Dave

Welcome from Winnsboro, South Carolina !!!!

Glad you can get your family involved !

Tom_in_Ca might chime in when he sees your post with more detailed answers but basically my suggestion is to only ask permission from owners of private property. As far as public property, usually if you do not see any "no metal detecting" signs it should be okay, you can also check online for local regulations pertaining to any specific area.

In case you haven't seen them yet here are some short but very helpful tutorials on the Equinox series:

(they cover both the 600 and 800)
