Hi, I have been useing a RTG sand scoop I bought 9 years ago. Very good scoop, but it's getting heavy to use . What's a good scoop for the beach with out breaking the bank. Let's say $ 100.00 to $200.00 bucks. I need something light but not fragile. I want the whole works , scoop, handle. I know there is a ton online, but I would like to hear what you all use. Thanks.

I'm already onto my 2nd scoop. I like this one with the 25º handle. The first one I had (Craigslist find) was a 90º. For me, the 90 was just weird, contorted angles to scoop while holding the detector in the other hand. ~$175.

Agree on upgrading to a CKG Titanium. Used an RTG for years. Worst thing about an RTG it is if you are a water hunter and ever drop it.

I would check with Phil, he can cut some great deals on most things.. And he is one of the sponsors .. https://www.myersdepot.com/

I think Stavr's makes a good scoop too, they run about 140.00 shipping maybe 25.? And that is no handle. I'm not sure if things are going well in Ukraine.. May message just to check in..

Only thing I do not like about Titanium, if it breaks.. and all scoops break. I'm around Annapolis and I check on a getting one welded..100.oo and they want 65.oo for SS.. Crazy, welding is not hard if you have a welder. SS is easy, Ti not every one has the right stuff for that metal.

RTG.........A lead sinker for sure. Back in the day I had a RTG 6.5 pounder and a Bill Babbs Aluminum. I gave the RTG away to a young guy from Jersey?

It's a L'il Digger. Very lightweight. Does a good job.
I had bought a Lesche shovel, higher quality but found it too heavy to carry on my belt.

Stronger than steel but corrodes unlike stainless.
:hmmm: Haven't heard that nor have I heard of any titanium scoop owners complaining about corrosion. Lots of titanium scoops out there on the market. It's all about the weight. Mine shows zero signs of corrosion, all I do is spray it with the hose after each trip. Didn't know that it was stronger than steel? Quick search says otherwise.

Me neither. But I have found some tit rings that show signs of rust. Yes , supposed to be stronger than steel and I also believe that should make it more brittle. Though I have yet to see any of them shattering or breaking off in pieces. 🤔

All has to do with how the Titanium is made and its intended use, the more oxygen the stronger, the stronger does not like movement and will break with continuous flexing. I've had two Titanium scoops made (2011), never rusted or any type of corrosion when used in saltwater. Both were made with Grade 6? ... .071 thickness/15 gauge, the same design scoop cracked in the same places after 6 plus years. Then I got a 720

I got the stuff when it was cheap.

Place with the most flex is where both cracked.

Never seen that before. Did you make it yourself ? The way I would look at it though is you got 6 years out of it. Not bad.

When I googled, this popped up: Link

  • Steel is stronger than titanium, with higher tensile yield strength. However, titanium offers higher strength-to-weight ratios.
  • Titanium boasts excellent corrosion resistance, especially in harsh environments. Some types of steel are more prone to corrosion.
