Myrtle Beach paid off.

...

I love it when City Councils do that. Simplifies things,....

I get what you are saying Skippy. An express allowance is SSeeeooo comforting. Ie.: Who can argue with it ? But just saying that if md'rs at other places see and read about this, and go seek to "clarify" it elsewhere, is where it starts to get risky. It can back-fire.

And I kind of have to question the rationale of the "need for that express allowance there" : If we can both agree that it was never disallowed there, then .... why wasn't that alone sufficient ammunition to tell a busy body nosey-parker to "bug off" ? :?:

Glamping at Pirateland RV resort in Myrtle Beach South Carolina and detecting some. The beach has been unproductive but finally on today's hunt it gave up the treasure. 1 man's 10k gold wedding ring in the tide line. 1st gold of the year for me.
That is a beauty! Love gold bands, easy melt'ers.

I think my Daughter and Husband have a trailer there? or close. See if I can confirm. I know they keep it there and go down several times during the summer.

I agree with Tom. I just seen where they made a few spots I hunt here, Historical. Not going to go asking questions, and it will not stop me. What I will do is stay away from the places on weekends when the traffic is higher.

Nah, it's probably not that, at all, Tom. Our City passed an ordinance specifically NOTING that it was allowed, because people were trying to harass metal detectorists. We've got a great relationship with the city, and they know we keep the parks cleaner from trash pickups. They passed the ordinance not to "allow it" but to make sure the public KNEW it was allowed.

Because the way Laws, Statutes, and ordinances work, we don't need them to "allow" us to do things. They only prohibit. But occasionally, one is passed simply to declare publicly that it's ok!

I love it when City Councils do that. Simplifies things, and totally enables the PO PO to tell people to mind their own business, when they call in. Without such an ordinance, most of the time the city has to send an officer out to investigate if there IS a problem (such as holes, damage, etc., even though MDing isn't illegal). By passing the ordinance, they no longer have to do that! Brilliant!

Skippy

This is exactly why I reached out to a local town now have not only talked to them at there main office but also had them call asking if I was legitimately willing to have emails and calls directed my way for lost valuables and I said yes. Asking appears to help in some cases. I would recommend asking anyone who may have an in with county or city before asking though as Tom is correct stirring hornets nests may not be ideal. However if I was traveling I would ask away honestly. Today for example now that I am finding decent coins (non clad) I went to a coin shop to see if they sold any coin displays unfortunately no but he did recommend a site. While there a guy bought 2 twenty ounce bars of silver and 10 in gold bouillon I had never seen a shop or these kinda things before lol blew me away. Once dude heard I detected he offered me to detect his land and others he owns. I recently have fallen into massive permissions all cause I striked up a conversation.

Sorry to continue the thread hijack btw. Wish I had found a gold ring. Still on my bucket list. Congrats and it fits a double hell yeah.

Congrats

On the sweet gold band , just as I figured , the guy that posted the past thread , wanted the beach all 4 himself , trying to scare off some compitition , myself Myrtle Beach was always sanded in , hard core hunting to find that gold , I new it was all hyped up BS , thanks 4 posting , in the past I have shown the metal hazards I have cleaned off the beach , that can injure , puncture people's feet , I would advise everyone to post the hazards cleaned off the beach , along with treasure , so states can all see , we are needed , and clean the hazards off the beach , otherwise everyone would be wearing steel tip boots to the beach  , happy hunting , Earl

Can a traveler look up for himself, to see if any "no md'ing" rules existed ? That would seem to be more-than-honest, eh ? What could be more law-abiding than that ? :?: In this digital day-&-age that we live in, it's hard to imagine any park or beach where, if a true "no md'ing" rule/law existed, that it couldn't be found on-line. Eg.: Dogs on leash, no fireworks, etc....

Otherwise, as you agree, we could be swatting hornet's nests. And then what potentially happens, is that someone starts a policy, over something that, truth-be-told, they never gave a moment's thought to, prior to that. Just sayin'. ...

Agreed I mainly meant every old spot I saw. But once again I am self serving so the next guy in line to hit it isn’t always on my mind but maybe I should care more about that. I just care about me damnit Tom.

Oh, sure. It was never disallowed in the first place. Right ? The issue was never "metal detecting". The issue was "pits" (holes deeper than 2 ft) and (gasp) metal shovels. And then a few md'rs here fretted themselves silly that a "scoop" might be construed as a "shovel".

Someone went and asked, and found someone to tell them that if it's metal, and it serves the purpose of digging, that it qualifies as a shovel. Oh joy of joys

CLEARLY this person was a victim of "no one cared UNTIL you asked".

And now you're saying that apparently someone went seeking clarification, and now, ... presto .... detecting has to be specifically allowed ? Well gee, I guess that was better than someone there saying "No md'ing" to this "pressing question". But I don't know why md'rs have to perpetually be swatting hornet's nests like that. I highly doubt that anyone ever gave 2 sh#ts about the distinction of a scoop vs a shovel. Nor do md'rs dig over 2 ft. So why all the fuss ? Why do we think we need "express allowances" ? :?:

Well if you have to know the City council had rewrite the law. They had no intentions to stop the metal detecting on the beach. The city manager had to go back ask the the city council if there intentions was to stop metal detecting. The answer was NO. City council rewritten the law. They forgotten about us guys metal detecting. Oops.
The locals guys here we're blowing up the City manager phone for weeks on this.
