Amazon has this Minelab in their Warehouse Deals section (returns) at a pretty good discount. Would this make a good first detector? I don't want something overly complicated but I want to start with something good.

Minelab Xterra pro would be a great starter machine, in fact, I really wish they were available when I first started. It can hang with some of the higher end machines too which is pretty amazing at its price point. It is also waterproof. I would not invest over a grand and not be entirely certain it's something I'm going to stick with. JMO...

That is an OK (not great) price for an Equinox 800 bundle. Like others, spending $1000 on a first detector especially an 800……..maybe.

People can and will vehemently debate whether the Equinox 800 is a good starter detector for a newbie. Sure, its default settings like turn on an go Park 1 or Field 1 will find targets.

I detected for many years before getting a 600 and then an 800. I basically had to REALLY learn how to metal detect when I learned how to succeed easily with the 600/800. Took about 50 hours which meant a month of daily hunting and practice.

If you don't mind the price tag, buy once cry once and get into it. You'll grow into the machine instead of out growing it. It has basic settings to turn on and go, there's just more to customize once you get into it.

That does make sense. It'd be hard to piece part all that gear for that price. I personally never used the WM-08 except for the one and only maiden hunt with it, and I never have used any carry bags I've gotten in bundles in any metal detector. Everything gotten in this package for a new detectorist, does cover all the bases, except for a digging tool.

There are lots of Youtube videos on the nox 800. It is easy to learn. you can download the manual to your phone or computer.

I would not buy that package. The vendors that sponsor and participate in this forum can make you a lot better deal.

More than likely this is not even a person just spreading Amazon links to hopefully get you to click on them so they get a common of everything you buy on Amazon.
Here is a REAL Minelab Equinox 800 deal!

I have had a bad experience with an Amazon return. It was a tripod that had broken parts on it (Amazon does not know what a functional piece of equipment is, so they guess). Luckily, I was planning on removing that part anyway as it wasn't needed for the antenna system I was building. That said, I also had a similar experience with a light system that was "new" from Amazon. Again, the part I wanted was not broken, so I just took off the light and can now mount my mag loop antenna on the rest of the stand. BTW, this second one was an outdoor light from a Chinese manufacturer that if they were truthfully named, would have had a brand like CheepKrap.

#1- I would never buy a detector from Amazon. #2 - If you’re just starting and want a Minelab I’d go with the Xterra Pro or the Equinox 700. #3 - Consider a Nokta Legend.
