Minelab’s new detector X-Terra Elite

Looks like another fine detector at a good price.

I just wonder why they keep adding/removing a few features and giving it a new name. I thought the whole idea of being able to do USB/Internet upgrades was to do these changes to one basic model. This was my concern when I saw what happened to the Simplex+

I would wager most of the newer Minelab units starting with the Equinox series have the same control/logic board which includes all features for both low and high end detectors.

Specific features are then enabled for different detector models.

I have a Vanquish 540. What/how would this benefit me if I upgraded?

First off, fully submersible, the primary reason I bought an X-Terra Pro. Beyond that there are loads of other features in the Pro and Elite. I wish they would have somehow been able to just do a firmware update for the Pro, that could have included the multi frequency. Both the Pro and Elite have some advantages over the Vanquish including ground balance, adjustable tone options, recovery speeds, single frequency mode option, lithium battery, light, vibration, larger display. I wish the X-Terras had the reduced TID scale. This is one thing IMO that I miss when not using the Vanquish.

So this comes in two named models, is the only difference the additional coil on the expedition?

No. Sorry for any confusion. The X-Terra Pro is an older different model (selectable, single frequency 5, 10, 15 & 8 Khz) that came out not long ago.

The newly released, X-Terra Elite is multi-IQ (simultaneous multi-frequencies) machine with one 15Khz single freq mode. I believe the X-Terra Elite is sold as a bare unit with 12" search coil. The X-Terra Elite Expedition pkg includes some additional accessories, 8" coil and wireless ML-85 headphones (kind of like the Vanquish 540 pro pack).

The X-Terra machines look very similar with almost identical build and share many of the same great features. It's too bad there wasn't a way to have all that in one machine, but I suppose that is the Equinox 900 at the next level pricing.

You’re not wrong. There’s been a clamoring for a Vanquish 540 replacement for quite some time, including for wives. Conversely, nobody was asking for what the Pro is.

The same way I felt about the Simplex+. They knew they had the new clones that would put the Simplex+ out to pasture, but continued to sell them to the end. All about the money.

Totally agree, the amount of begginer/mid range detectors on the market now is silly! At least Nokta/XP released SOME software updates. Can't say I've ever heard of a minelab software update...

Minelab is owned and run by a large corporate organization. XP Detectors is still run by the founder. Huge difference in the way they offer new machines.
XP Metal Detectors has a sister company called HelioFrance that manufactures solar energy and thermal heating systems. Same founder and owner.

makes you wonder which firm is more profitable. But smart people like Steve Jobs, can effective manage different firms, ig Apple and Pixar and then the iPhone project. These are what they call high bandwidth founders.

6 feet? Not sure what you intend to find at that depth, but no hobby metal detector is capable of that depth that I'm aware of...
I am interested in a good detector that can go down six feet in Connecticut. Help please.
It would be interesting to know what you are looking for at 6 feet deep? Ground penetrating radar is the only think I know that might go that deep. or if you have lidar maps in your county or parish they might ID unusual depressions in the area you are hunting.
