A freind told be that after WW2 soldiers would try to take weapons back home as souvenirs then later told that they couldn’t keep them. it was likely th case that someone wanted to keep this as a memory then forced to gut and de-mag th weaponShame, that was a nice "toggle top". Would likely have fetched a good price on the gun markets. Electrolysis candidate to try to determine its vintage? Wonder where the mag got to? What state is this?

Wow, I hadn't heard that before. That's a very interesting find!A freind told be that after WW2 soldiers would try to take weapons back home as souvenirs then later told that they couldn’t keep them. it was likely th case that someone wanted to keep this as a memory then forced to gut and de-mag th weapon. I guess th reason for this gun ending up in th ground will remain a mysterySome did come back with souvenir firearms. I don't know why he was told not to. Some had samurai swords. They were probably told not to bring back full auto guns. Semiauto pistols like Walther P-38s and Lugers and bolt action Mausers were popular, the Mausers being desireable hunting rifles.
Perhaps certain regiments were more restrictive than others? Just a thought. Some did come back with souvenir firearms. I don't know why he was told not to. Some had samurai swords.
