Hi i found a horseshoe yesterday. It was made around the 1930's. It is rusted but all their. I was wondering if anyone knows how to clean it? Thanks Chris

Electrolysis works great but takes some time. With a horse shoe I'd probably use a wire brush or wheel.

I have rolled a newspaper around one and smacked it with a hammer :D Worked pretty good and quick, but I wouldn't suggest it to others as I wouldn't want to be responsible for a break or any damage.

What would you recommend for cleaning a rusty gun lockplate?
Electrolysis or wire wheel - both perhaps?

Used to own a stripping business and we cleaned many rusted antiques and things folks wanted cleaned up with low pressure blasting. Used walnut shells, plastic media and real fine glass bead at very low pressure, like less than 20 psi. We shot in a range of 6psi to 45 psi. Could also clean some old coins without damage. Might be worth a try if you can find someone with a pressure blast cabinet, not a siphon cabinet.

How could I preserve this lockplate but leaving
it in as-found condition?
Mike

I have done the electrolysis on an old wood plane that I got at junk store. All it takes is a 5 gallon bucket, a battery charger, washing soda, and a bug chunk of waste iron to draw the rust onto. There are instructions all over the internet for it. The plane game out nice without any damage. I just put it on the stove to clear out any chemical traces of water then oiled it up. It's still in my garage.

Any one try water pressure VERY CAREFULLY of course. And goggles.....

Too be honest the best would be electrolysis;)

I will post pics as soon as I can... i find (about everytime I go out) horsehoes all the time. From roman to middle ages to modern..

The best method I found was frying it with some electric juice:D:D
