Today the northern California coast was hit with a 7.0 quake, located about
50 miles NW off the coast near Sacramento. A tsunami warning was issued, but was eventually canceled.

Here is hoping that none of our NorCal beach hunters were hurt. Check in and let us know.

I think they cancelled any such warning for tidal wave.

Not sure what damage the quake did on land, but as for the ocean waves : It was much ado about nothing, is what I heard.

Yeah, I heard a report last night that the quake was caused by a slip fault –where one continental plate slides over another one. So, there was no large water displacement to cause a tsunami.

We had a coworker rush home right in the middle of an important customer meeting to go save his dogs. SF dude living 2 blocks away from the ocean. He got home to discover police everywhere and helicopters circling, then gathered the dogs and rushed back out bracing for impact basically ready to die.

Then similarly our boss (who was in Oregon) told us evacuation order was in place for our office in Fremont and to get out.

Then.... nothing.

I sure wish in this day and age of AI we could decide not to go bananas when some weather event happens.

The major risk when the quake is that close to the coast is that the only warning you get for
a possible tsunami is the quake itself since the incoming water doesn't have to cross half a
continent to reach the shore... So better safe since it only happens so infrequently and there
are thrust faults in the same area. Better to evacuate when not necessary than to stay when
you needed to evacuate...

There is an old saying about gold. When it thunders gold goes deeper. Hmmm a 7.0 quake must send the gold about a foot deeper.

So Cal is having some pretty strong Santa Ana winds right now and yes, a fire has broken out in the Malibu area. It's being called the Franklin fire.
Of course, it is not in the Malibu beach, it is in the canyons.
Saw that fire on the morning news, Yikes!

Yesterday there was a flurry of smallish shakers here in California and Nevada and on up "the Ring of Fire" out into the Aleutians. A bunch just south west of Adak where I got to a glorious 13 months back in 1970 - 71.

Lost power around 6:45am this morning, and when I left for work at 7:30 was still out.
I'm thinking wind blew something into a transformer somewhere. Hopefully when I
get home later it'll be back.

It may be part of the Public Service Power Shutoff (PSPS). Several areas in Moreno Valley are affected.

Could have been but those usually don't occur until after 9-ish AM when working hours start for most
non-emergency utility employees. No way to see if the trucks I saw when I came home from work were
repairing something or working on infrastructure. The power came back on after less than 2 hours out.

Well, yesterday, large parts of Banning, Cabazon and the Morongo reservation were out of electric power most of the day, including the Outlet stores in Cabazon.
